dsidle61 Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 hey guys florida fisherman here. This evening i snapped my 12 year old ultra light rod catching my PB bass (6lbs dont laugh!) Im in need of a new rod, problem is i literally have never bought myself a rod lol the one i snapped is the only rod i ever remember having I used to live in Pennsylvania and it worked fine for catching 2 pound bass. I know the ultra light is just not enough for bass down here so i need to bulk up. I dont want to lose the high sensitivity i had w that rod. I throw alot of frogs but i also throw a fair amount of soft plastics (senkos, lizards, flukes etc) as well as rapalas and poprs. If you guys could give me any help i would greatly appreciate it. im trying to stay in the 100$ or less price range. 1 Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 I saw the photos of your PB in the southern competitions thread,I run the one for the northern guys... Great fish!!!! A great rod for the money is the Abu Garcia Vengeance, it is only $50... I have used the casting rod but I'm sure the spinning rod isjust as good... 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted November 2, 2013 Super User Posted November 2, 2013 Spinning or bait casting rod? The lews speed stick is a decent rod yet not to of a heavy action were we lose the feel of the softer lures. In the one piece spinning 6' rod in a medium action is around $39.99 on eBay. That's discounted. They also offer one in a 6' med/but action. I have the medium action and just ordered the med/hvy action. If your looking for a 6'6" or a 7' spinning rod they have those too. I have the lews speed stick and Berkley lightening shock rods too. Both rods feel awesome action wise too. These are inbetween $49 to $99. I have the vengeance rod too it's a good rod also. But overall I'd look at the lews first it's a great feeling blank. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted November 2, 2013 Super User Posted November 2, 2013 daiwa team t baitcasting rod. under 100 and i love it...looks good too. Quote

Go to Academy like and get an Allstar rod I liked mine a lot until I broke it, car door. I took it back got store credit and was going to get another one but they had these 7' Waterloo Medium action rods originally $170 on clearance for $34.99... Can't beat that so I got 2, they are extremely sensitive I use that rod mainly for worms and cranks and when you catch a fish it's fun as hell getting it in They are opening a new Academy on south side blvd on 7/15 can't wait for that a lot closer to me, and hopefully they have some store opening sales going on. If you go to the one in OP text me I'll meet u over there and then we can fish some spot over in OP Quote
Mike2841 Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 Abu veritas 7' m, I've got one that I use for all the baits you listed. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted November 2, 2013 Super User Posted November 2, 2013 For the 100 dollar mark, I really like the St. Croix mojo. You've mentioned several different techniques. A good 6'6" or 7' MHF might fit the bill. Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 2, 2013 Super User Posted November 2, 2013 Spinning or baitcasting rod? What reel and line type do you use? You need a basic med/hvy fast action bass rod, some mfr's call this a 3 power, fast action rod. Lots of off the self rods available, suggest that you go to a tackle store, take your reel and check out rods for yourself. Tom Quote
Super User tomustang Posted November 2, 2013 Super User Posted November 2, 2013 I catch 4lb bass and pickerel just fine on an ultralight. The power of the rod should be more specific to the area you're throwing into and the weight of your lure not on how big the fish are. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted November 3, 2013 Super User Posted November 3, 2013 I'm not a rocket scientist, but ultralight & Pennsylvania almost guarantees he broke a spinning rod. If you want a Medium power rod for plastics, then I would suggest the Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth 6'9" Med X-Fast. It will require some searching as these rods no longer can be found in the low $70s like when they first came out. MSRP is $129.95. fishusa has the 2-piece model for $99.95. I didn't see the 1-piece on the list of rods they carry. You have to click in the gray area where it says "Model" to see the rod models they sell. I usually suggest keeping an eye on the classifieds, but can't recall seeing a Fenwick Smallmouth rod for sale on one yet. That could be a clue as to how well people like theirs. I have a couple Falcon Originals. They are pretty nice for the price...about $90. $100 max is a bit limiting. Stop by your local Walmart, and look at the Daiwa Jupiter rod. I have one of the casting rods, and like it quite a bit. Actually it stays at a relative's home in Florida for when I visit. That and a Falcon Original and Shimano Compre. Which reminds me, check out some of the local smaller shops. Asking price for my Compre was $75...a $110 rod. Had a Dick's sticker on it so they must have picked up some older models from Dicks at a good price. The Berkley Lightning Shock is always an option given in this price range. Another possibility is the Ethos rods sold by Academy Sports. You should also check out the spinning rods sold by Cabela's and BassProShop. Guarantee it is going to take up some of your free time. Super User BassinLou Posted November 3, 2013 Super User Posted November 3, 2013 Dsidle, you are going to get bombarded with opinions which is great. But I do not recommend you to get a medium rod, since I know you frog fish so much. Think about the MH. Quote

Capt.Bob Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 St. Croix Premier, Made in the USA and in 6'6" or 7' MF excellent all round for your needs. If no for the cranks I would say MHF, but the Med. rod would help with a little more forgiveness for the cranks and treble hook baits. Quote
