I can not texas rig a soft plastic if I had to save my life by doing it. I insert the hook at 90 degrees, pull the lure up the shank, put the eye of the hook into the lure (necessary for me,) flip the hook around, and when I try to get the hook out the back, it is either at an angle where I can not make it weedless, or the eye of the hook is now out of the front of my bait, or both... does anyone know what I might be doing wrong? Why can I not t-rig my soft plastics?

I would suggest a screw lock hook or an offset hook so that the soft plastic your are texas rigging is straight, this is most likely your problem...

I just typed "how to texas rig" on youtube and lots of good videos. It does depend on what type of bait you are using and hook style as well. check out a few of those vids and ask more questions as they come up.

Lay plastic on table.

Take hook and lay it on top of plastic as you want to fish it, with or without hook eye showing.

Place hook so that the eye comes out 1/4 inch from the plastic's head.

Note where hook will go into bottom of plastic so that the point and barb lay flat on top of bait.

Tie hook onto line after your weight.

Put hook into front of plastic and then coming out of plastic 1/4 inch from plastic's head.

You know where to run the hook's point into the plastic so that it lays flat.

You are ready to rock and roll.

When all fails go to YouTube and check out the videos.

Good luck.

Using a 3/0 EWG worm hook, trying to rig zoom horny toads and super flukes

I would use a 4/0 with the fluke and either 4/0 or 5/0 with the toad. Rigging is the same with either. And I prefer a Trokar 4/0 straight shank worm hook for worms. The reason I would recommend those size hooks is that both of those baits are relatively thick so you need some room for the bait to go on hookset...it will help your hookup ratio. Also I have found the larger 5/0 helps keep a toad upright correctly acting as a keel. But certainly try them for yourself and see what you prefer.

After doing the first part of the texas rig through the nose, do I have to inset the hook at a 90 degree angle into the belly and out the back?

Yes. Then lay the point end of the hook on the bait's back. If you are in grass you may want to skin hook the tip. Do you know what that is?

I'm assuming that is the point of the hook is tucked into the top back of the lure, for weedlessness, which is actually what I am trying to accomplish

Use the hook barb to gauge the depth you insert the hook point, rotate the hook when the barb enters the soft plastic nose end. Pull hook down until it reaches the hook shank, then rotate the hook around so the pointvis upright, before pulling the hook eye into the nose/ head until the eye is just inside the soft plastic worm, creature. As mention align the hook to oneside of the plastic body to determine where the hook point should be inserted so the plastic lays striaght, this step takes some practice.

Flukes have a slot molded into the belly, the hook doesn't need to penetrate a lot of plastic. A trick that helps is to push the hook point all the through the top of the soft plastic so it lays flat and exposed. To make the hook point tip weedless, just slide the hook back about 1/8", pinch the soft plastic to make a bulge, then slip the point into bulge to just cover the tip. This is called skin hooking.

Good luck.
