Ohio Dave Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 I was all set to grab up a couple tournament pro reels for up-grading the worm fishing and jerk bait fishing then I read the ad for the bb1 pro which way do I go??? and what do you all think of the Fritts cranking rods??/ thanks for your time David Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted October 30, 2013 Super User Posted October 30, 2013 I can't speak on the pro but I've owned multiple tournament pros and bb1xxx models. I'd go with the TP out if those two models. Quote
Ohio Dave Posted October 30, 2013 Author Posted October 30, 2013 thanks, could you share a bit of the advantage of the tournament pro? Quote
Brian Needham Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 its really hard to beat the TP model...... if I did a bunch of cranking I would look at the BB1 just because it was designed for cranking, though I have never used a BB1. and I use a TP5.4. for my deep cranking Quote
Ohio Dave Posted October 31, 2013 Author Posted October 31, 2013 thanks again for the knowledge!! Quote
Paul Peixoto Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 tour pro.. but if you said upgrade a couple of reels? id get both lol TP has dual breaking .. bb1pro has external centrifugal braking system (it looks like it replaces the dual- check out the review on youtube) but i cant speak for the bb1 pro. i do own a tour pro and love it Quote
Capt.Bob Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 For your purpose I would have the Tournament Pro, it has a drilled shallow spool, which is lighter and has better startup which gives better performance with lighter lures. The BB1 has a deeper spool and extended line guide and is a better with heavier lures once you get the spool cranked up with less friction on the line between the spool and guide can cast heavier stuff a mile and a half,,,,, but for worms and plastic or anything under 3/8 oz you would be very happy with the Tournament Pro, that would be my choice or the job you are referring to. Ohio Dave Posted October 31, 2013 Author Posted October 31, 2013 thanks bob, do you still have that one for sale?? Quote
Ohio Dave Posted October 31, 2013 Author Posted October 31, 2013 I wish I had the coin to be able to buy both but in reality I will be swapping out one at a time and pretty darn slow at that. I don't think I even own baits heavier than 1/2 oz as I don't need to punch matts and don't like those giant swim baits I am trying to get decent enough gear to be able to keep up with the bass team I am starting for my students. Despite fishing nearly my entire life, there are a couple of boys far ahead of me in gear and ability I can not wait to get this going, it should be a real hoot working with those young men Quote
Arv Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Also in on the tp. Great reel for the money, especially if you shop around. They can be had for less than what you would pay for a new bb1 if you search. 1 Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted October 31, 2013 Super User Posted October 31, 2013 thanks, could you share a bit of the advantage of the tournament pro? Now this is compared to the regular bb1xxx model not the pro. It's a lighter reel. Better quality parts. The dual braking is nice. Once you get the centrifugal dialed in all you have to do is add a little magnetic if the wind picks up or if there's a decent weight difference in lures. It's also a little smaller in frame so it's easier to palm for smaller hands. As for the pro it seems to be of the same build quality just has a larger spool. Quote
Krappiehog Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 i have 2 of the ss1's i love um... its what i learned on... i reel left so i will have to bump up when i go for a 7:1:1.. i have not been disopointed in lews! Quote
Ohio Dave Posted October 31, 2013 Author Posted October 31, 2013 thanks guys: Pretty sure I am going to stay with the TP I am not one to go out on a limb when I don't need to. the tournament pro has a great history of doing exactly what I need it to do Quote

21farms Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 i've owned two TPs and now have the team lew's pro, a BB1 and a BB1 pro. i think the BB1 pro is easily the best of the bunch for casting. but the BB1 is not just for cranking...perhaps the 5.1:1 PS1 model is because of the low gear ratio and the exclusion of the instant anti-reverse but not the other models. nor are you limited to only using braid. the BB1 spools are deep and hold a lot of line and, especially when filled with line, are heavy...which is actually good for casting long distances because the momentum keeps the spool spinning and paying out line. you want a lighter spool with less line capacity for pitching and casting light lures because it will have less inertia and start up faster. the reason the BB1 pro spool is braid-ready is stronger and it has a little notch in the spindle where you can tie your braid through so there won't be any slippage. also, it is wider so the line guide lays down your braid and a broader angle so you get less line digging with the thinner diameter braids. the main reason i like the BB1 pro so much is because i've found the braking system flat-out works great. i have yet to even come close to backlashing with it and it is so simple to adjust and the casts are effortless and far. i am not really a fan of dual-brakes...people think it's the best of both worlds (centrifugal and magnetic) but i think it's a half-hearted implementation of each.
