MichiganFishing1997 Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 So while I was making my off season wishlist of things to pick up, I thought of the techniques I have yet to venture into. Dropshoting is very popular, and Spybaits seem to be a new entry into the western bass fishing world. Both of these styles of fishing interested me, so I looked into it. Both seem to require around a ML Rod, Fast Action, And are light line presentations. Around 6Lb Test. So could I double up these two presentations in one combo and have a set up that is not decent, but very proficient in both styles of fishing? Just a thought. Thanks Christian Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 The Spy Bait lures I've seen are like 3/8 oz which is likely at the top end of a ML lure range. For the Spy Bait I look for a 7 1/2 foot Med mod/fast to keep the trebles hooked up. For finesse drop shot I like ML XF 6'9". Quote
Super User David P Posted October 30, 2013 Super User Posted October 30, 2013 It's VERY do-able, in fact I've had great success with the Spybait .. and I use my drop shot rod for it. If possible, I'd look for a 7'6 rod or 7'9. If I were to do it again, i'd grab the 792 Dobyns Extreme rod, but when up against the wall in my last tournament, I used my 702dx Spinning Dobyns rod (my go to drop shot rod) and it performed flawlessly. MichiganFishing1997 Posted October 30, 2013 Author Posted October 30, 2013 So between a medium to medium light rod? Or basically a rod rated up to about a 1/2oz or 3/4oz I'm guessing? Sounds like I need the rod a lot longer than I was originally looking at. Thanks for the replies! Quote
Rodney Heupel Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 The recomended rod is a 7 ft, fiberglass with a moderate taper rated as lite or medium lite. Yes you may be able to dual purpose a drop shot rod, but generally drop shot rods are shorter and just a bit more backbone to them. The key is this technique is a finesse presentation that will catch big bass in pressured clear water lakes. As soon as this catches on in the U.S. I feel there will be a flood of spybait rods on the market. Quote
