Mr_Scrogg Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 Definate perch of the white variety. In Kansas, you must kill it. Quote

Brian Needham Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 In Kansas, you must kill it. I would like to know more too..... Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 30, 2013 Global Moderator Posted October 30, 2013 Why kill it? I would like to know more too..... In Kansas, and other states I'm sure, they're considered an ANS, aquatic nuisance species. They aren't supposed to be in the lakes they're in and they compete directly with a lot of native game fish for food and habitat and in some cases are outcompeteing native species. It is against the law to posses a live white perch or to release them, even into the body of water that they came out of or use them for live bait in the lake it was caught from. Same goes for the Asian carp. Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Beat me to it Clayton. ^^^^ What he said Quote
Brian Needham Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 gotcha..totally feel ya on the Asian carp front. Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Same thing for Zebras. We joke in the KC Area thread about Lake Wabaunsee's Gate Ladies. Spraying boats with bleach before you can launch, livewells, trailers. Then again before you leave. Questioning you, giving you the 3rd degree about where youve fished, when you fished it. Quote
edfitzvb Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 They are native here and delicious. Remind me of flounder. I sometimes catch them on spinnerbaits or crankbaits. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted October 30, 2013 Super User Posted October 30, 2013 Another vote for white perch Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 white perch will take over a body of water more so then crappie and lead to the depletion of other fish species. I havent researched it myself, but on Smith Mountain Lake the story goes that there was apparently a healthy thriving white bass population at one time...then came the white perch. now its considered a rarity to catch a white bass there. and if you are live bait fishing they will irritate the crap out of you, its happened to me many night while catfishing. so i just go to a smaller hook and catch the hell out of them. i will toss the bigger ones back, but the smaller ones become cutbait, caught a stripped bass on white perch cutbait back in april. the stripper knocked the cut bait up the line, i re-rigged it and caught a catfish on the same piece of cutbait 15 minutes later lol... actually right now is a great time of year to catch the perch at SML. I was getting into some decent sized yellow perch last October when i was down there along with the white perch. yet i cant get either to bite any of my lures like the tiny ratl traps, toss out a minnow or nightcrawler and they are all over it though Quote
