AmatuerJames Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I've been looking into getting a kayak for days when I want to reach those places I cant from the shore and even maybe take to a lake or another pond, looking for advice on specific kayaks, type of kayaks, kayaking tips, and more specifically what i shouldn't do on big lakes if even go to them at all. (a trailer with the kayak would be best and i want to try to keep the price under $500 if possible.) Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Quote
Team_Dougherty Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 You wont have much of a choice for a trailer and a kayak for under $500. I would look at craigs list to see to get a used kayak. The only thing I can suggest on big lakes, wear your life jacket. Use the search function you will find a lot of info about kayaks and kayak fishing. Quote

Super User Jrob78 Posted October 29, 2013 Super User Posted October 29, 2013 I see your in TX. You should check out the TX Fishing Forum. It has a kayak section with 100s' of DFW area kayakers and info on how to demo yaks locally. By all means read what you find here too. Quote

Are you unable to car top, or hoist a yak into a truck bed? You can find yaks that are fairly light in the $500 range. I've seen some yaks trailered, but only the heavier kind, and usually Hobie.... 1 Quote

gallowaypt Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 I agree that you should look on Craigslist. I just recently searched Craigslist for over a month looking for the right used kayak at the right price. My endless toiling finally paid off in the form of a 2013 perception pescador SOT. I got it for a considerable discount, and it seems to be everything I need in a starter kayak. All the reviews for this kayak are outstanding, and everyone agrees that it is great value for a reasonable price. I have yet to take it out but will post a review soon. Good luck with the search! ps Since you have a Tahoe, you could easily strap down the kayak, assuming it isnt over 80 lbs or so, with ratchet straps and avoid the cost of a trailer. Quote

Let me know how you like it! And I dont have rails or rear windows to run straps through so could I still strap it down without scratching my paint? Quote

And I dont have rails or rear windows to run straps through so could I still strap it down without scratching my paint? They make foam blocks for that purpose along with helping to not damage the kayak. About tying it to the roof with no rack, I don't have any experience with this and couldn't tell you how effective this would be. Hopefully an experienced kayaker can answer this for you. Quote

And I dont have rails or rear windows to run straps through so could I still strap it down without scratching my paint? You need to go to Mariner Sails in Dallas. They have everything you need. My buddy carries his kayak on his little Kia hatchback with no roof rails. There are several different systems that will work for you. Also, I believe Academy carries the Perception Pescador, that is probably about the best bang for your buck on a less expensive new yak. Like gallowaypt said though, you can find some smoking deals on used boats if you're patient. That website I mentioned earlier has a "classifieds" section in the kayak forum, start there. Quote
Team_Dougherty Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 so if anyone has any advice on where to find a rack or a search engine that would be appreciated too I am sorry, I meant use the search function on this board. There are many topics about kayaks on here. A roof rack maybe tough. There is no way I could get my 70LB kayak on the roof of my SUV. The one time I tried to use the J hook bracket on the factory cross member it was too flimsy to support the kayak. Quote

I actually wouldn't recommend ratchet straps as it is real easy to apply to much force and damage the kayak or roof rack on a longer trip. I have used the standard cam lock straps on probably thousands of miles worth of trips with no issues. Quote

gallowaypt Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 That's what I meant, the cam lock straps. I have the NRS 1", and they have worked great so far. Quote
