10Lb Fluoro On Spinning

Will 10lb fluoro behave itself on a spinning reel? Its premium stuff (Gamma Edge). Will it stay on and not twist too much or will it just shoot off when I open the bail? I know most people use 6lb if they go straight fluoro.

Probably depends in the reel and technique youre using. Check the specs on the reel.

I mostly throw 8lb flouro but like Arv said its mostly going to depend on the reel spool size.

Short answer, not really.  If I was going to use 10# fluoro on a spinning reel, I'd be looking for the largest spool diameter possible, on a light weight reel.  A Daiwa 4000 or Shimano 5000 series or better would work.

Gamma FC 10 lb is listed at .012D, this is very large diameter FC! Line diameter and memory is what makes a poor choice for spinning reels. Sunline Sniper FC 14 lb is .012 for example, the 10 lb is .010. Be aware of line diameters.

If you are looking for a manageable 10 lb, check out the Toray Blackwater line, Solaroam Bass Hi-Class; 10 lb is .011D.

For spinning reels I prefer 6-8# floro. Anything higher you would probably be better served with braid or braid and a leader. I tried mono and copoly in 10# and didn't care for it.

I absolutely agree, a stradic 5000 or sustain 5000 would be light enough.  A wide spool reel in 3000 or 4000 could work too, like a pflueger arbor.  I'd go 10# braid with a f/c leader myself.

I ran 10# tatsu on a Stradic FJ2500 last year

now I just spooled up 8# tatsu on a ci41000

DO NOT overfill it and use plenty of line conditioner.

I used to fish 10# P-Line 100% fluoro or Halo on my 3000 size Shimano spinners and didn't encounter any line management issues that remember. I think Brain Needham is correct in his suggestion to not over-fill the spool, keep an eye on that. The only real negative I remember when using straight 10# fluoro was my casting distance wasn't very good. I could control the line fine as far as accuracy was concerned. Only when trying to make the absolute longest casts possible did I really not like using straight fluoro.

 

I will also say this, I've since switched to braid as my main line and use different fluoro and copoly lines and pound tests for leaders and I'm much much happier with the performance I get with my spinning gear.

I have no doubt about that.  I wouldn't overfill a spinning reel with any kind of line.

I fish 10lb Sunline Super on a 2500 Stradic C14 without any problems.

If you are using 10-pound test on a spinning rig do not fill the reel to the top of the spool. You will drive your self nuts with the line twist coming off the reel.

 

Make sure the reel and rod can handle 10-pound test line by looking at their specifications.

 

I usually go with no more than 8-pound test on a spinning rig as I use spinning set ups for finesse fishing and small, lightweight crankbaits like the #5 Shad Raps.

Spooled a yard and opened the bail and it all jumped off and tangled (and yes, I spooled it correctly). I guess its a no go then. I spooled the other 99 yards on a baitcaster and I'll use it for cranking, jerkbaits, shakyheads, etc. I'll just use it as a leader tied to 20lb powerpro on the spinning.

well that sucks..... I never had an issue, except the one time I thought I could spool up and fish it right then, though I think it was more I overfilled it.

 

since then I use liberal amounts of line and lure conditioner and let it sit overnight before i use the reel.

I do this on spinning or baitcast.
