Super User bigbill Posted October 28, 2013 Super User Posted October 28, 2013 Sorry for the dumb question but if you really like a rod and reel would you buy extra new ones?? Quote
Brian Needham Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I would buy duplicates if I really liked a rod...... like a jig rod or crank rod, but they would be rigged up on deck with the rest, I wouldn't buy a rod just to have in the closet. I haven't reached the point where I have started buying duplicates yet though Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted October 28, 2013 Super User Posted October 28, 2013 Im stuck in that conundrum right now. I very much like variety when it comes to reels rods dont have duplicates of any. I have a Quantum Smoke rod that I think is an excellent rod weight balance sensitivity power price yet cant bring myself to get another of the same just because I want to try different brands. Too on my reels I have a Shimano Core50mg7 and its awesome. Im wanting another reel but have passed-up great deals/sales on another Core cause of this wanting to try other reels. I actually returned a Chronarch 50E cause it was basically like my Curado 50E. There was nothing wrong with the reel but I got the Curado 50E for $100 (yeah should have bought 2 at that time) new on sale so spending $200 for the CH50E seemed like a waste if that makes sense. Not getting anything different better just paying twice as much. So yeah I would if the deal that I couldnt pass-up came along say 50% off. Quote
The Rooster Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 If they had multiple uses, like if two of the same exact rod/reel combos would be useful for having a jig on one while having a spinnerbait on the other, then I'd do it. I currently have none like that, but I would if the shop had not been out of stock on one particular rod when I went back for a second one. On reels, I have had as many as 5 of the same at the same time, only in different ratios. 3 of those were even the same ratio. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted October 28, 2013 Super User Posted October 28, 2013 Reels, yes as they serve multiple purposes. For rods i have but only if for the reasons mentioned above i want to have multiple rods that serve different purposes. When I am out smallmouth fishing I will very often take 2 6'8" MXF spinning rods, one for weightless soft plastics and one for lighter bottom contact presentations or jerk baits. Quote
LMB ANGLER Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 yes i would, i like to try different tackle but when i find the right one i stay with it and buy more Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted October 28, 2013 Super User Posted October 28, 2013 Everyone's already said it. Yes I would. My reel dictates what's on the end of my line. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 28, 2013 Super User Posted October 28, 2013 Rods no, reels yes. My most used and favorite spinning reels are abu sorons and they are discontinued, I see one one I'm buying it. Quote
Super User Marty Posted October 28, 2013 Super User Posted October 28, 2013 I wouldn't if I already owned the number of rods and reels that I felt suited my needs. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 28, 2013 Author Super User Posted October 28, 2013 My problem is when I find something I like, wether it's a rod or a lure when I go to buy more it's discontinued. My reels I'm stocked up on. But the better quality rods I'm not. I know once I get use to the tad better ($99 on sale for $49) I'm not going in reverse. I'm hooked on them. I'd be spending $200 to shash them away. If something stupid happens to one of my four rods I can replace it that night. All four rods are different lengths and actions. When we were riding dirtbikes I had all the pistons, gaskets, sprockets, chains, tires and tubes in stock. When one bike broke we rebuilt it that night. I can also do boring cylinders too here. We had very little stoppage and down time during the season. I'd like to stay fishing once the season starts too. My problem is I had a black beauty 6' rod that I liked this rod a lot. From using it all the time with it constantly bending at the upper handle while fighting bass the handle had a vertical split in it. I couldn't replace it. I been looking to match that rod and action but I can't. Now I found that similair action and feel only it's better than my old faithful rod. I don't want to be caught in a place were I can't replace it. As I get older I like things to stay the same it's hard to change. I have a pile of new rods here again that I'm not crazy about. Looks like the family will be getting new rod setups this year for Xmas. Plus the kids my friend takes fishing too. The truth is I had a problem with breaking fishing rods when I was younger I was cursed. I broke two to three rods a year. This is why I stuck with cheap rods for so long. Now I'm very careful with my equipment and I put it away in its place the minute I return home from fishing. The last expensive fly rod I broke I rolled up the power window up on it. When I heard the crunch I cringed. I bought this new fly rod combo while on vacation in Maine at kittery trading post for 50% off and I paid $125 for it. I used it one night and that's the night the window bit it. I promised myself I would never do that again. I'm very careful with my fishing stuff now. My kids were still young at the time and wanted to replace it for me but it's a $200 rod. It was a nice gesture that my kids made. God bless them. There adults and still have good hearts. This is why I was into cheap rods. I hope my rod breaking curse is over. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted October 29, 2013 Super User Posted October 29, 2013 I have multiples of several reels, but not in rods. I haven't fished any techniques enough to know which rod I would like best for it. Well...with the exception of one rod. I like throwing spinnerbaits on the Lightning 6' MH I got for my grandson. So far that is all I have used that rod for. I have several rods in each power rating. Such as several 7' MHF that carry different lures...once in awhile the same type lure, but in a different color. Mostly I have purchased rods that are considered all-around rods. I pretty much throw whatever lure I feel like at the time on any of them. I did purchase a couple custom rods over the winter. Both 7'MHF. Both with blanks from the same company, but different blank models, an RX-7 and an RX-8 blank. I really like these rods, and wouldn't hesitate to buy more...provide funds were available. I have more reels than rods, therefore some reels sit. I got 3 Ambassadeur Black Max 1600 reels as a package deal. Only one is on a rod. I like this reel enough that the others well be kept as spares...if I should never get as many rods as reels. Same for my Fuegos. At least one is always on a rod, and at least one is sitting in a drawer. Bought 2 of the older gold Carbonlites as a package deal. One is on a rod, and the other sits in a drawer. That puppy ain't going anywhere based on the performance of the one I have been using. I like my Fenwick ET Smallmouth 6'10" MF well enough that another couple would be appreciated. Same can be said for my older Cumara 7'2" MHF. Both are very good all-around rods. Quote
The Rooster Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 Bigbill, I have the same problem as you. I worry that once I find something I like they'll stop making it. I'm a very detail oriented person, so products that are close enough for most people don't cut it with me. I want what I consider absolute perfection in everything I buy, and then I want more than one of those. I must have inherited this from my mother. She is way worse than me, finding products she likes, buying all the store has, and hitting other stores for their stock also. For some examples, she has 300 bottles of her favorite shampoo as I type this, at least 7 sets of electric hair curlers, one in use and 6 reserves, and every 100 watt incandescent light bulb she can find (at least 4 large storage tubs full of new unopened packs). I'm not that bad. I don't have anything I've "stocked" in reserve. That's probably because my taste in tackle exceeds my budget though. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 29, 2013 Author Super User Posted October 29, 2013 When I heard that bomber was discontinuing there model fat A's in the older colors that still work great today. I went out and purchased a big box of them. Any lure that's harder to find that I have success with I have a box of them. Like the Norman thin N's. Even when a certain color is hotter than the rest I buy more of those too. Fishing from shore it's easy to miss read the water conditions. I think most of the guy's and gals fishing from shore have this problem but don't realize they have a problem like I did recently. When some of my ritual of colors didn't work I went to a firetiger or a citrus shad and it saved me from trashing my confidence. The water looked clear to very slightly stained in some spots near the shoreline. But as it went farther out it got more stained. So the brighter colors needed to be added to my variety of lures. The Norman thin N in chartreuse killer is another color for muddy water conditions to low light conditions. I have many new ones in my box too. When BPS discontinued my hottest topwater lure I have ever seen the BPS/XPS Topnocker I was upset. I had a whole set of there colors plus some extra in the #25 chartreuse color. I have no clue why it still wasn't used. I contacted them and heard when the sales are down it gets discontinued. It will never happen to me again. I'm stocked up on every lure I use. Now I'm worried about my fishing rods that I like. It's very hard to a perfect rod for me. Now I found what action and power I like so I better buy one of each now. I ran the model number and it's already discontinued at the manufacturer. But the new replacement has the newer split handle that's the craze right now I guess. I'm thinking the blank/tube is the same action and power wise. It's a constant ongoing thing I guess. Quote
