Soda Spilled On My Reels!

This my first post on this forum.And I wanted to ask you guys something.I had just brought these two nice spinning reels and soda kind of spilled on them.I rinsed them off and I was wondering would the soda destroy or damage the reel.And if it does,what would I have to do to repair it.Let me know as soon as possible.

Soda is extremely corrosive, get them cleaned. Then stop drinking soda, imagine what it does inside your body.

Around these parts its called pop. But yes clean your stuff. You wouldn't want sticky parts or worse.

Lick the soda off your reels and they will be fine. Just kidding. I'd get them cleaned. Welcome to the forum.

A little splashed on the outside and rinsed off soon won't likely cause problems. If there's any chance in got to the internals I recommend a breakdown and re-lube.

Soda is not corrosive as previously stated but it is sticky and can gum up internals if they got that deep in there.

Google PH levels of substances not just one ingredient.  Not trying to get into a scientific debate here but the acidity level of soda is about the same as OJ and you can leave a piece of steel in a cup of soda for a long time and it will never eat through it.  

 

The sugar and sticky factor is way more detrimental than the acidity.

pH of Coke Classic is 2.5   And ya it can dissolve stuff but colas are some of the most acidic. Other sodas are not nearly that harsh.

 

To the OP, if they got soaked then tear them down, if just on the outside, rinse and wipe dry then check for stickyness. Once thats gone your fine

I know if you dunk a reel in saltwater (wade fishing) you want to soak it in freshwater and clean it as soon as possible, salt and acid are both corrosive, so I would try that.

I washed my reels in freshwater right after some spilled on it,do I still need to do it or do need to re-lube it and how do you re-lube it?

Most spinning reels are sealed better than their BC counterparts.

As Mike stated, if you only spilled on the outside and they weren't saturated with soda, then an outside rinse with fresh water and wipe down.

The reels are not going to wear out from it. It is more sticky than caustic to any of the reels parts..

If I was freshwater fishing I would of dunked them in the water asap.

I drank coke and diet coke 24/7 for 50 years. I just had prostate cancer and there not sure what causes it. I drink only water, plain water now. I can turn back the abuse I did to my body but I may get a few more years before go to the next life. I just hope they have fishing.

man if soda was spilled I would just break the reel down just to be safe!

I really didn't see any go into the actual reel just some of it on the handle,but I will open it up jus to be sure.And thanks for the advice guys but I really don't drink soda often.But it's still something you should try to avoid sometimes.
