Ive seen alot of threads about bearings, question is, When would you replace them? Is it something straight out of the box you should, or care to do? OR do you replace them when they become worn? If so how can you tell they are worn? Im completely new to them and this season I just picked up my first one, Shimano Citica 201E.If this is a beat on question,(Ive searched, came up with nuthin) if you could refer me to the thread Im more than happy to read!

Thanks!!

Hopefully DVT will come along and post. He is a reel smith, site sponsor and very very knowledgeable.

Thanks for the kind words. There's no need to change bearings on a new reel but I recommend flushing them with acetone and re-lubing with a light oil. Add a drop after 4-6 trips or as performance dictates. You'll see a huge improvement just with this. To determine the condition of a bearing, after flushing let it dry completely and prior to lubing spin it on a pencil etc. It should spin freely and nearly silently for several seconds and slowly loose momentum. If in doubt flush again. If no improvement it's time to replace it.

If you really want to improve that Citica, buy yourself a Hawgtech Handle. I have 2 Citica 200E's and IMHO they are just fine with the factory spool bearings. I just added a Hawgtech Handle to one of them and I like it so much that I will not use the other one until I get a Hawgtech Handle for it too. The Hawgtech Handle is a carbon fiber handle that gives you 2 ball bearing per knob. Right now, your Citica has no ball bearings in the knobs. Look to right on this page and you will see their add. They are a sponsor here. No, I do not get a discount on my next handle for a referral nor do I work for them. Just a happy customer. LOL

I replace if new in box or a 2003 daiwa pixy as I'd rather have a great spool bearing that will increase casting distance and ease of casting.. I've replaced a ton of worn bearings with new Bocas in them as they either got really dirty and the owner neglected to clean thus making them rough and or really slow..even after flushing the damage was done so they needed to be replaced..

I'm just a reel nut and want the best performance I can get out of my reels when I first get them..

Flushing stock bearings does improve them as most factory reels over oil the bearings.

I thought I put this is the original post but does anyone know where I can come across a owners/instruction manual for the Citica201E? Ive looked at Shimanos website and the only citica manuals I can find are the 200B,D models.... I bought my reel as a display model and got nuthin with it...
