I know that Quantum had a problem with their gears, but from what I understand they've gotten better. Now I know that a lot of people consider the Smoke to be one of the best reels for the price, but how are  the Energy's? I felt one and it felt pretty smooth and solid. I liked the eva handles and I think I'm one of the few that thinks that the new paint job is an improvement, but orange is my favorite color. How do these hold up compared to other reels of a similar price?

with new technology and advances to these reels are very good, the top pros of bass fishing use them for a reason. i just got my first baitcaster, and yes its a quantum centex, i like it so far but cant wait to use it more to really test the guts out of it, how ever. they make one of the best saltwater reels ever called cabo.

I'm not as down on Quantum as some. I like the extra crank support bearing and pinion posts molded into the frame. Grindy gears are a common complaint and sadly the QC and fit & finish can be problems too.

My buddy has a Energy 2 models ago and I just picked up an Energy PT VI, the one the current orange model replaced. My buddies is a solid reel and has no problems. He likes his Revo STX better as it casts a little further in his opinion. I haven't used mine much, it is small, smooth and heard good things about them. If your not set on the newer model you can pick this version up on TW for 100 bucks. I hear the smoke is the BEST though, but I am not a fan of the graphics on it. I would get one if the price is right.

You may want to check out the Pflueger Supreme XT casting reels, they are black and orange, same price as the new quantum energy. If you are hesitent base on quantums quality questions, the reviews and comments about the pflueger BC reels are they are underrated, and worth every penny. They are on my "next reel list" for sure.

I owned an older Quantum Energy PT, just sold it for 60 bucks 2 months ago.  Overall it was a solid performing reel, I can't remember the year it was from, but it was a smooth reel and I think it is one of the better Quantum reels.

Good luck. Be sure to tell us how it performs, I was interested in getting on but I ended up getting (another) mettle. War Eagle's right about the pros being paid to use them, and I'll prove it. Look at Ike' s Facebook page, and if you look closely at some of his "fun" fishing pics, the reels in the background are Steez' s. Also, do you really think Skeet likes Wright and McGill more than Abu. No, he likes the paycheck from Wright and McGill more than the one from Abu. I think that a company has to be to have a product that is quality, because they're relying on it to win tournaments, but again it mainly depends on a paycheck. If pros were able to be sponsored by anyone that they wanted, we would be seeing a lot more Abu and Shimano jerseys. You are right though with the advancement of technology it has allowed many reel brands to step up their game.

Ike used to be sponsored by daiwa so I wouldn't be surprised if he still had a bunch of their reels and uses them when not on tour.

Pros could outfish us with a Shakespeare rod and zebco reel. Sponsorships are part of the deal and pros will use whoever pays them or gives them free product and I don't blame them.

How ever it's not good to go by pro staff. Figure that the top guys get new reels when they break. We as consumers have to pay when that happens. I have owned a smoke and it was a great reel. The other reels I owned of theirs were not great for the price point.

quantums are one of my favorite brands and its becoming number 1 slowly, iv used quantum for saltwater for a long time and it never let me down, thats why i trust this brand. people aways gave me bad reviews about quantum, but believe it or not, most of the tackle that people dont like because their experience is mostly due to personal error. i hate shimano with a passion but most guys here loves them, at the end its all personal preference.

Just about every time someone breaks a rod is because of user error, and we actually all damage tackle even though we try not to. A lot of times you're just going to damage your tackle, no matter how hard you try not to. In the fishing world "durability" just goes for how much user damage something can hold up to, some rods like ugly stiks can hold up to anything while others (not naming names like carrot stix...whoops) can't be looked at too hard. I use to hate Shimano but Abu is slowly steering me away. I still can't stand Daiwa reels though.
