Excuse My Ignorance

Is the term "dirty south" derogatory? A conversation on another forum has prompted me to ask this question. Doing a search, I have found it refers to a number of states, or partial states in the south, or is related to rap music, southern rock music, a bowhunting supply store, and a food truck. I found nothing derogatory about the term, yet I was called arrogant and insulting. Am I incorrect?

Well, the South is dirty.  At least it is this time of year, where I live.  All of the farmers are out in the fields harvesting their crops and kicking up dust.  That makes everything dirty down here in the South.  In fact, we have to wash our windows twice a year: After they plant in the Spring and Harvest in the Fall.  I find nothing derogatory about the phrase at all.  It is accurate.

I always thought the Dirty South was a reference that was used by rap artists that came from the south. I think I remember Arrested Development, Outkast, and Ludacris specifically using the term.

 

I've also heard it used to describe a woman's woohoo.

The original thread from a long standing member was titled "My trip to the dirty south" and was about his fishing trip to visit his family in AK. This guy attacked him and I defended the term Dirty South as a term of endearment. This was his response to my post.

It seems to me you are arrogant, just because some ganster's rap rage about there opinion of the south, that it's written in stone. The urban dictionary is not anything like the webster dictionary, dirty south is not in the webster dictionary.
Dirty South is a slang term used by people who dislike the south,.
All I have done is make a stand for something that was wrong. It offends people of the south, you do know this is a open forum to people of the south too.
You know I've never heard in my entire life, and I'm 68 years old, that someone is gonna move up north when they retire, it's always going to move south when they retire, not the dirty south.
I'm in awe of this... yall are living in the most corrupt, and dangerous, and filthy city in America, yall are putting the south down. We have lot's of problems in the south, but nothing like yall have in Chicago.

First off, I don't listen to gangster rap.  I've done a search of "Dirty South" and rap music, southern rock music, a future TV pilot, a DJ, a bowhunting supply store, and a food truck are the only things that come up. Nothing derogatory. Maybe I'm ignorant, or maybe you just read into things way too much. Either way, you should come visit Chicago. We have a beautiful skyline, outstanding food, great music and entertainment, An incredible fishery, and some of the friendliest people you could ever run into.

Been to Chi town many times , it's a wonderful city, a diverse population, with many cultural interests with an outstanding university, Univ of Chicago.  I'm one of those PC, tree hugging types that appreciate what many urban metropolises offer.

There is no question some of the major cities have their problems, cities and towns both big and small have 1 thing in common, none of them are utopia.  Crime, drug use, slums, and corruption are common denominators almost everywhere.  Living in South Fla we have some magnificent areas, yet minutes away there are areas that rival the worst places up north.

Just guessing here, but I would think "Up North" and "Down South" would have something to do with how one looks at a map. North is always up and South is always down.

 

I would guess "Back East" would come from back when people were migrating and moving west across the US. The vast majority of them were actually from the East, so they would probably say "Back East" when referring to the East coast.

 

I think "Out West" might come from the same era when people were traveling across the US. I figure the term "Headed Out West" was used quite often and it more than likely stuck.

 

I have never claimed to be real smart, so those may not be accurate, just my best guesses.
