Missourifishin Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Some time between now and next spring I'm probably going to buy my first baitcasting reel. Do you think this would be a good choice for a beginner? Quote
JeziHogg Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Take the $80 your going to spend on it and put it away. Save yourself another $120 and buy a Chronarch 50/51E. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 You don't need to spend $200 for a reel to learn on. A $100> will get you a quality reel that you won't "outgrow" as you become more skilled at casting. The round reels have a place in bass fishing but that one has way more line capacity than you need. I suggest a BPS Pro Qualifier on sale which will be under $100. Other possibilities are Shimano Citica, or ABU Revo S to name just a few. 3 Quote
Missourifishin Posted October 23, 2013 Author Posted October 23, 2013 Thanks for the replies. Money is indeed an issue. I have other non-fishing things I need to start saving for soon. Plus I will need a rod to pair with my first casting reel. So $100 or less is definitely what I had in mind. Quote
tholmes Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Another option is to shop the Flea Market section on this board. Lots of bargains to be found there. Tom 1 Quote

I've gotten some good stuff there. I don't even know where to begin when it comes to what kind of casting reel I should get though. Quote
Trey Harpel Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 look at the new Daiwa Tatula...EXCELLENT reel for the money as they can be had for 120$ or so and Ill put that reel up against the White Curado E anyday.. Quote
Jolly Green Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Where I would begin is holding a round reel on a rod in my hands to see how it feels; many people find them bulky and not as comfortable as low profile baitcasters. Either way, there are probably better reels out there for only a few more dollars. The one you are looking at is part of Abu's revamp of the Ambassadeur line, and while I've never used it, I am a little suspicious of the quality. Some tried and true low profile models have already been suggested here, but if a round reel suits you then I suggest the Ambassadeur C3 4600. The new generation retails for $120, older used ones could be had for much less. Quote
0119 Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 The Ambassadeur SX or the Revo SX? The new Ambassadeur SX is a revamped BCX and you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would give you a favorable comment on the BCX. O.P., if you are referring to the Revo SX that's a different story. Quote
