Super User Felix77 Posted October 23, 2013 Super User Posted October 23, 2013 I went to Harbor Freight and picked up a tub of their matte black. I wanted to dabble with this whole painting jigs with scraps I had leftover from the season. I took all my ball jigs and decided to paint them. Some of them had a place for skirts so I took some leftover skirt material and made them into mini finesse jigs. Throw a grub or 3 inch craw and you are good to go! Some lessons learned 1 - Getting the right amount of heat takes practice. Glad I did it on these scraps before I tried them on better jigs. After time you get the timing down. 2 - Knock off excess as hard and fast as you can. In going too slow I ended up with some bumps in my jig heads. Remedied when I began tapping them pretty aggressively against the paint container to get the excess powder off. 3 - Take the excess out of the eyes BEFORE curing them. They are a PIA to take off once cured. 4 - This is addicting. Some little kinks to work out but I don't think the fish will mind. I know what I am getting for Christmas 1 Quote
cadman Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 So, what are you getting for Christmas? If you run into a lot of jigs that are screwed up (not to your liking, the fish really don't care) take them all and put them in some paint stripper, in about a 1/2 -1 hour, they will be clean. Rinse with soap and water, and they will be ready for a new coat of paint. BTW nice looking jigs. 1 Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted October 23, 2013 Author Super User Posted October 23, 2013 Thanks cadman ... I plan on getting a bunch of unpainted jigs, skirts and some powder paint and having a field day coming up with unique combinations. Should be fun. Good tip on the paint stripper. I was wondering about that too. Quote
tholmes Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Nice looking jigs! If you do get cured paint in the eyes, it can be removed with a heated needle. If you get REALLY addicted, you might consider investing in a fluid bed. It makes getting a light, even coat of paint much easier. I got mine here: http://www.tjstackle.com/fluidbed2.htm Tom Quote
wnybassman Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 I have not had any luck with the matte black yet. Maybe I should give it another go. A fluid bed makes life a little easier as well. I made my own with Cadman's instruction. 1 Quote

I don't want to hijack this thread, so Pm me with what issues you are having with the black matte powder paint and maybe I can help you solve your problem. Quote

Super User smalljaw67 Posted October 25, 2013 Super User Posted October 25, 2013 You did it now, just wait, you'll get heads and skirt material and then it won't be long until you have a melting pot and a couple of molds. Welcome to the wonderful worl of tackle making, and I believe you have started the right way, do a little at first to see if it is for you or not and then slowly work your way up. I'm just kidding about the pouring part but it does sound like you really enjoyed using powder paint and if you liked that I'm going to guess you'll like making the skirt too but some are happy to do that, others like to go for the entire thing, I know I did and I love every minute of it and the winters will be much easier to take, good luck and enjoy, BTW, nice job with the jigs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks ... I have dabbled in the skirt making already which is why I up'd my game to painting the jigs. I unfortunately can't really do the lead thing because I have no safe place to do that really. It's the reason I stopped pouring my plastics. With 4 kids around I didn't want to poison them to death. LOL Quote

I am definitely in touch with Cadman. I should be placing an order soon. The winter just started and I am trying to get my last few weekends of fishing in where I can. Once I am completely stuck at home I intend to dedicate some quality time for this. Quote
