Jon G Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 I wanted to change the bearings out on my mg speed spool but i have never done this before. I watched a few videos on how people do it on other reels and i know what tools i would need but i dont know what kit i should get. Looking on numerous websites i saw there is kits for so many different reels but none specifically for the tourney mg speed spool. Is there a kit for it i just have not seen? Or is there another kit i could use? Quote
Jon G Posted October 22, 2013 Author Posted October 22, 2013 I also forgot to ask if I shouldn not even get a kit and just buy them in a pack sort of like what Tackle Warehouse offers Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted October 22, 2013 Super User Posted October 22, 2013 Call up Tackle Trap and they'll set you up or DVT who is a site sponsor also sells them. You need the 2 spool bearings. Not a complete kit. Try flushing your stock bearings first. You'd be surprised at the difference it can make. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted October 22, 2013 Super User Posted October 22, 2013 definitely flush the bearings first before you upgrade to bocas. flushing bearings can make a world of difference if you are unhappy with an out of box reels performance. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted October 22, 2013 Super User Posted October 22, 2013 Send DVT a message he should still have them in stock Quote

They just recently started carrying reel bearings. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted October 22, 2013 Super User Posted October 22, 2013 I think you will want 3 bearings one for the spool. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I agree with flushing bearings as a first step. If you decide to buy bearings down the road I can size them for you. 1 Quote
Fishwhittler Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I think you will want 3 bearings one for the spool. Only two bearings are necessary. The bearing under the spool-tension knob only comes into play when the spool is under heavy load; it has nothing to do with casting. The two bearings to replace are the bearing in the palm-side plate and the bearing mounted on the spool shaft next to the spool. You'll need some sort of tool to remove this pin for cleaning or replacing bearings. You don't want to try doing it without the right tools—you run the risk of damaging the spool. Spool-pin pliers will run you around $35 from Tackle Trap. They're not cheap, but they'll save you the cost of potentially replacing your spool. 1 Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted October 23, 2013 Super User Posted October 23, 2013 Buy the hedgehog studios tool. It's a great little piece of equipment. $35 on eBay. Quote
21farms Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 the bearing in the palm sideplate should be 3x10x4 (same size as the one under the tension cap) and the one on the spool shaft should be 5x11x4. these are very common sizes, especially the 3x10x4 that is used by everybody except on some daiwas. so if you have to buy a few extras, they'll always come in handy. boca recently posted a video by a user showing how to do a bearing change using a pair of pliers to remove the spool pin...DON'T DO THAT!!! that could easily result in a bent spool shaft and/or bent spool pin, not to mention scratches to the spool shaft. Trey Harpel Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Flushing grease from a stock stainless bearing is not a long term fix. The bearing will run looser when you flush it but you have to make sure the bearing is always oiled or it will prematurely fail. The ceramic hybrid bearings can run dry unlike a stainless bearing With the right tools its VERY easy to do.. The Boca spool pin pliers make life MUCH easier at getting those pins off the spool shaft.. Once that is done all you have to do is swap the bearings out by removing the clips on the tension knob and the side plate.. Just make sure you take the orange seals off the bearings as they tend to run better without them on. If you have any questions feel free to ask! Trey Quote

They take oil but from the factory have too much a lot of the time. That's why flushing them and adding 1 drop you see a substantial increase in performance. As for boca orange seals. They are a no contact bearing so removing the seal doesn't do a whole lot except make them louder. The gain would be minimal at best. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted October 23, 2013 Super User Posted October 23, 2013 Trey knows his stuff. Welcome to the forums, Nitroman. Quote
Trey Harpel Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 thanks guys! I was directed to this Forum by someone so I figured Id drop in! From factory grease can be found in the spool bearings as reels tend to sit on shelves for weeks or months so they pack them so they dont dry out..Ive worked on THOUSANDS of reels over the years and get reels straight from factory when guys buy them for upgrades or cleanings as they want all factory oil and grease removed and less put back in.. On the orange seal being its RUBBER and pourous over time Ive seen where they swell up and push on the cage or race causing the bearings to be slow.. Every reel I own has the seals off be it ZPI or Bocas... Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted October 24, 2013 Super User Posted October 24, 2013 Interesting about the seals. Makes perfect sense though. I asked Boca about that when I ordered mine. Weather to run them with or without and they said it wouldn't matter from a performance standpoint. I choose without since it's easier to add oil here and there. Thanks for the tip though. As for the grease I guess I've been lucky. Though I don't work on reels in mass like you. Any of the ones I've bought and flushed I've never seen grease in the bearings. Just a ton of oil but not saying your aren't right. Quote
Trey Harpel Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Yea now the Boca orange seals with the metal seals your good either way.. Ive seen everything from all manufacturers where they pack with WAY too much oil and grease and some reels on the shelf are dry as a bone..Either way IMO every reel that is purchased should be broken down and flushed just to make sure.. I also prefer swaping bearings out with the Bocas as Id reather have a cermaic hybrid then a SS bearing for my spool bearings.. Quote
