mkfriedrich Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 I know jigs are a very popular topic. To me they are the most confusing bait to purchase do to how many there are, styles and all. I want to place an order with seibert outdoors but im just trying to get good recommendations on which styles. So far im looking at the brush and football's. what would you guys get to cover all the conditions in the water. I have colors down pat. thanks again guys! Quote
dreamertino Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 football and brush in 3/8 and 1/2 oz size with greens browns and some black and blue Quote
John G Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Keep in mind that a 1/2 oz jig will be close to or over 3/4 oz with the hook and skirt. Throw on a trailer and you are close to an ounce or more. I just weighed a 1/2 oz Strike King Jig and with the jig head, skirt, hook and rattle, it weighs 0.814 oz. I am looking at close to an ounce or more when I add a trailer. Quote
mkfriedrich Posted October 22, 2013 Author Posted October 22, 2013 thanks guys, what do yall use to weight your baits? Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted October 22, 2013 Super User Posted October 22, 2013 arkie is most versatile Quote
John G Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 thanks guys, what do yall use to weight your baits? A Rage Tail Baby Craw makes for a nice trailer. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 22, 2013 Super User Posted October 22, 2013 Arkey and brush heads are the most versitile. In the thickest of cover, I prefer the brush head. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted October 22, 2013 Super User Posted October 22, 2013 brush heads and grass jigs are versatile. throw on a rage trailer and your good to go. I use 1/4 to 3/4 oz, depending on depth and where the fishies are suspending. Quote
bassh8er Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I keep it simple. Brush heads in a black/blue and in a brown/orange. I like 1/4 oz and will occasionally fish the 1/2. I also use a swim jig in bluegill and a shad pattern, this is also a 1/4 oz version. You can buy as many baits and sizes as you want but this is what I use and keeps it simple; it also reduces the amounts and colors of trailers that you need to keep in hand. Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 23, 2013 Super User Posted October 23, 2013 Jig weight should be with hook and weed guard, less skirts or trailers. Agian like nearly everything in fishing NO standards and this also applies to the hook Break down the presentation technique; casting horizontal or flipping/ pitching, letting the jig fall vertical. A compact jig head with a weed guard like the Arkie or brush jig works good fished vertical. Grass heads and football head work good fished horizontal, cast and retrieved. The casting jig has more space between the hook point and back of the jig head, longer jig. I would start out with 1/2 jig, fish it until you know how fast it falls, how it feels under the conditions you fish. You can slow the fall rate with bulky trailers and skirts, speed it up with streamline trailers and skirts. The versitle color combinations are purple/brown/black (peanut & jelly) and purple/green (June bug). These colors work everywhere, give about a year before broadening you selection. Tom Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted October 23, 2013 Super User Posted October 23, 2013 I use football and round jigs for just about everything. Favorite colors are blue/black, black, and watermelon. Quote
