Tony L. Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Have any of you ever added HOMEMADE scents to any of your soft plastic lures? I realize that I a never going to recreate megastrike or match a shad/crawfish flavor in my kitchen. But, when I see coffee, garlic, and salted lures, I think to myself "shouldn't I be able to do this at home to spice up some of the unscented lures that I have lying around?". To the best of my knowledge, I have never heard of anyone who has used ingredients from around the house to add scent to their lures, but it seems like it should be possible and I know that catfishermen do it all the time. Has anyone ever tried this with bass lures, and has it been successful? Realizing you can't impregnate lures that are already formed, is there any way to make the scent last if you do add it yourself? Quote
boostr Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 I've seen guys on tv make their own marinade or scent, and just use a vacuum packer sealer, the vacuum will suck the concoction in to the plastics. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted October 22, 2013 Super User Posted October 22, 2013 I have made homemade stink bait for cat fishing, but never for bass fishing. Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted October 22, 2013 Super User Posted October 22, 2013 Yea I have heard about that for other species not so much bass though Quote
Super User Marty Posted October 22, 2013 Super User Posted October 22, 2013 I've read about fishermen making homemade scents. Fow example, using petroleum jelly as a base and adding flavor. Just make sure that what you use is not a substance that has a negative effect on a bass. is there any way to make the scent last if you do add it yourself? A gel should last considerably longer than a liquid. I say go for it. Lots of anglers have had success with their own creations, be they lures, scents or otherwise. Quote
bassguytom Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 A friend of mine puts tequila in a spray bottle and sprays it on his plastics when he is fishing. He swears by it but I have never tried it. I dip my worms in coffee only very early in the morning. Quote

Global Moderator Mike L Posted October 23, 2013 Global Moderator Posted October 23, 2013 I've made my own for years... 70% baby oil and 30% anise. Mike Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted October 23, 2013 Super User Posted October 23, 2013 I dip my worms in coffee only very early in the morning. Wouldn't want groggy bait! Also your friend is probably a closet alcoholic haha.. SURE you're spraying it on the lures, that explains both the empty bottles and the smell to the cops/wife! This man may be onto something Quote
