ericci99 Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Hey guys I am new to the forums and was looking for some advice or experience you have had with a few baitcasting rods. I am getting my first baitcaster and already have a reel picked out however I still need a rod. Since it is my first baitcaster I don't want anything too high end, however I dont want a piece of junk either. I would be getting a 7' MH rod with a fast action. I have picked out a few baitcasters I was looking at and wanted some advice on deciding or if you have personal experience with the rod if you could share it. Below are links to the rods. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Fishing-Rods/Casting-Rods|/pc/104793480/c/104764680/sc/104823180/Abu-Garcia174-Vengeance8482-Casting-Rod/1333916.uts?WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104793480%3Bcat104764680%3Bcat104823180 http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Fishing-Rods/Casting-Rods|/pc/104793480/c/104764680/sc/104823180/Shimano174-Sellus-Casting-Rods/1304125.uts?WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104793480%3Bcat104764680%3Bcat104823180 http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Fishing-Rods/Casting-Rods|/pc/104793480/c/104764680/sc/104823180/Daiwa-Aird-Casting-Rod/1330439.uts?WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104793480%3Bcat104764680%3Bcat104823180 http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Tourney-Special-Trigger-Rods/product/12041105005514/ http://www.basspro.com/Berkley-Lightning-Rod-Shock-Series-Trigger-Rods/product/104157/ With the Berkley Lightning rod I was looking at reviews and it seems like alot of people with 7' MH have had problems with the rods breaking and was wondering if anyone else has had this problem before? Thanks Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted October 22, 2013 Super User Posted October 22, 2013 Really those rods are inter changeable in my opinion. I understand you don't want to pay too much for a rod when learning baitcasting. In my personal experience the rod isn't the "most important" factor when learning to use a baitcaster, as long as you stay within the ratings and more so in the middle range when picking the lure/baits you will be using. I hope you picked out a solid reel, which is more important at this stage. So any of those rods will be fine. Only thing I can say is bring the reel in and see how it balances to make your decision. Super User rockchalk06 Posted October 22, 2013 Super User Posted October 22, 2013 I abused the hell out of my Lighting rods and never had an issue at all with them. The 7' MH was the most common one made so who knows. Buy the Shock rod at Walmart and save 10-15 bucks. Walmart has one of the best return policies too. If you loose your receipt your only out 40 bucks. I differ slightly from lmbfisherman in that I like to put more in the rod than the reel. If your not fishing a lot of bottom baits, the rods sensitivity is not such a major concern as if you are. I want to feel everything I can feel on the bottom of the lake. I don't have electronics on my boat, so a jig on the bottom is my eyes. Just whatever you do, do not buy a piece of junk for your first reel. You don't need to spend a fortune either. If you scrimp on a reel and buy something that is going to cause you problems, its just going to make you hate baitcasters even more. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted October 22, 2013 Super User Posted October 22, 2013 I have a couple vengeance's, and a couple lightning rod shocks. Both are excellent rods for the money. If you can swing a few bucks more, the vendettas are also very nice. I use the vengeance and lightning rod shock for reaction baits, and vendettas and veritas for "feel" baits. Quote
rmcguirk Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Another suggestion is to keep an eye on the flea market here. You can pick up some great rods at fantastic prices. That way, you can buy up to a nicer rig without going out of pocket any more. Quote
ericci99 Posted October 22, 2013 Author Posted October 22, 2013 If it helps I would be using the rod as an all around general rod but mainly using jigs, bottom baits and flipping and pitching, while using some crankbaits. I know you can't really do everything with one rod however for now I would like the best for all around bass fishing. Thanks! Quote

Thanks I know I say this everywhere on this sight but I suggest the Denali Rods jadewood series. They are $100 dollars and have a lifetime warranty guarantee. But good luck breaking one...I have nothing but denalis. they are tough as nails, sensitive, and the company is ran by some great people. Yes its a little more than the lightning rods but with the lifetime warranty your money won't be wasted. check them out! http://www.denalirods.com/ 1 Quote
