Go To Bait For Neighborhood Canals?

I have a canal a 30 second walk from my house. After lying low for the heat of the summer, the fish are finally biting. I'm new to S. Florida so I have no experience fishing canals. I have caught 4-5 dinks on a weightless fluke but nothing with any size, even though i see them in there.

 

So...how do you approach these featureless canals? Would a large texas rigged worm be a good idea?

Yes i have been using the cotton candy/watermelon/pumkin lizards also they have been producing well but seems to not out shine the senkos for some reason. I am going to try a few new spots this weekend and see how it goes just going to bring my plastic arsenal and see whats out there.

As you can see, there are several things you can throw. I like to throw zoom, trick worms, night crawlers, and flukes.

RVADOG, I have the same problem. I tried every single soft plastic in my tackle box and nothing, zero, nada. I fish the canal on 97 ave and Fontainebleau Blvd. We should plan a fishing trip with one of the Floridians.

From what little bass fishing I'm doing now, nothing is really clicking in my neck of the woods.  Inshore fishing is on fire, but that will be ending very soon.  Had tarpon close to 40# and 37" snook, plus jacks, lady fish and bluefish to the point where I'm sore, but still out there everyday.

Lizards and brush hogs. Throw em at the shoreline weightless, let them sit when they land for a 2 or 3 count them reel em back slow. They hit it when they start moving.

yep! can't agree more! i've been killing them lately on green and black lizards doing exactly that! although all i catch lately are dinks

I would go with a weightless fluke or weightless 4.2" senko type bait, a zoom centepede is also excellant in the canals.  Any shade of watermelon is good.  Fish slow with a jerk and pause technique.  Early morning and low light conditions a frog is a good choice.

When the bass are not biting in the residental canals and lakes, but I can see them around, I usually go ultra light line, use smaller size plastics and fish slowly.

Try different times of the day. Eventually you will figure out when they are eating.

what has always worked awesome 4 me both in fresh n salt water is,throwing a casting net n catch the same bait the fish eat in that canal or lake and just putting what i catch on the hook with a bobber or free line.,ive gotten eventhing and they bite fast too,a lil secret i do is i squish the bait fish a lil to cripple him so it looks like its dieing or sick in the water..man the bass,peacocks,snakeheads tear it up..live bait n feed then what they eat in that body of water,u will never go wrong..

I bought some sizmic toads online and hoping they work! Anyone use those before?

Got some worms as well, can't hurt to try different things. 

 

BassPR sounds like you are in the same area as me. I tried out Snapper Creek the other day which is south of where you fish. Take 97th ave all the way down till you hit the canal. I didn't even feel a bite in that canal. I tried a spinner, some grub, a worm, and then I switched to a small minnow. Not a darn thing touched my bait. 

 

I guess I'll need to buy me some lizards, seems to be a favorite on this forum!
