crankbait2009 Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 I hear a lot of people say to throw this or that in black or white. whether it be plastics, spinner baits, etc. Why do they not make a number of BLACK crankbaits? I notice Bandit has one and some of the crappie lures are in black. are bass crankbaits not very effective in the black color? Quote
Super User Scott F Posted October 21, 2013 Super User Posted October 21, 2013 I doubt the lack of black crankbaits has anything to do with their ability to catch fish, but I'm sure that the manufacturers think they won't catch many fishermen. 2 Quote
McKinneyLonghorn Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 I know a few guys who custom paint crankbaits and have been considering getting them to paint a few up in some sort of black and dark blue pattern. I have seen this a few times and the lures look really good, especially when they are matched with a red eye. Not sure if they would catch fish (don't see why they wouldn't) but they might catch me. CTGalloway21 Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 yeah, I have a few Bandit cranks in black. never caught crap on them. Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 I've caught lots of bass on black Rebel Crappie Crank-R's. They dive to 8 or 10' and it's a 2" 3/8oz. bait, so they're a pretty decent size. Quote
crankbait2009 Posted October 21, 2013 Author Posted October 21, 2013 i was out fishing with another member "The Rooster" yesterday and he was using a black crank. He pulled in the bigger of the fish him and I caught. He used the black bandit crank........ Did black have anything to do with it? who knows...... I was using white on my catches...... Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 I usually reach for the black cranks when water is turbid and reddish colored. I also use them more when the water is below 55 degrees. These are the times when black crankbaits have produced for me, but it's just a preference/confidence thing more than anything else (I've had fishing partners do just as well on chartreuse or white in those same conditions.) Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 21, 2013 Global Moderator Posted October 21, 2013 yeah, I have a few Bandit cranks in black. never caught crap on them. Send them to me, I'll get rid of those defective baits for you I've got a black Bandit with scratches all over it. I've had my best success on it in dirtier water. Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted October 21, 2013 Super User Posted October 21, 2013 I also have the black bandit crank. 200 series I think. I've picked up a few fish on it. Quote

That's my opinion as well. The fish readily hit my black Jitterbugs and soft plastics and there's no reason they wouldn't hit black cranks as well. Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 23, 2013 Super User Posted October 23, 2013 yeah, I have a few Bandit cranks in black. never caught crap on them. CT, they work! They work on Virginia tidal rivers. But don't tell anyone!!! Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted October 23, 2013 Super User Posted October 23, 2013 My Dad hand painted a 1- minus black a few years ago. That bait really worked good in muddy water. He caught quite a few on it. Quote
Trey Harpel Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I just painted up a bunch of bandits for a guy down south..Mostly blk neon as he says he whacks them on that color.. Black worms seem to work all the time and in any water color so why not solid blk cranks? Quote
McKinneyLonghorn Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 This thread got me thinking, and I will apologize in advance if this is considered hijacking the thread. What are some other soft plastic colors that we don't see crankbaits painted in? I have never seen them commercially produced, but a guy I know recently painted me up some watermelon with red flake squarebills. The green paint is slightly translucent and the pattern looks just like a soft plastic in that color. I just got them a week ago and haven't used them yet, but since I have caught a lot of fish on senkos in that color I see no reason the square bills won't work as well. (I would post a picture, but I am not sure if we are allowed to do that since I don't want this post to be construed as advertising.) In addition to black crankbaits with blue specks, I am thinking junebug would be a good pattern. May need to get a few painted up and see what happens. Quote

Rootbeer is the color that comes to mind as being closest to watermelon w/red fleck. Although the color is getting harder to find. Did a search for junebug colored cranks and I found this. I'd like to see pics of the crankbaits you got painted, btw. 1 Quote
McKinneyLonghorn Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Here is a picture of the crankbait. I see no reason why it won't catch fish, I just need to get off the couch and try it out. 1 Quote

river-rat Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 I can tell you that a black crankbait with an orange belly will absolutely slay the bass in the Atchafalaya Basin in muddy water. Been using them since the early 70's when the crankbait craze first got started. I still use a Bagley BB1, BB2, and a Norman Big and Little N in this color. Quote
