Super User Sam Posted October 18, 2013 Super User Posted October 18, 2013 Hey guy and gals. Just wanted you all to know that on Wednesday, October 16th I had my right knee replaced. So far, so good, but the pain is starting to show up so I will be popping those little pain pills as soon as they get here. Surgeon says that it is possible that I can fish the two day Smith Mountain Lake Tournament on the weekend of November 9th but it is too soon to tell. He will let me know when I go back in three weeks. If anyone out there has had a knee replacement or knows of someone that has had the surgery please let me know as I like to read positive outcome stories. Quote

Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted October 18, 2013 Super User Posted October 18, 2013 My dad has had both knees cut on for a total of 6 times. His knees are great. Hasn't had any problems out of them since the last surgery. 1 Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted October 18, 2013 Super User Posted October 18, 2013 Sister-in-law had knee replacement at the end of August. She is walking better than she has in years. Apparently the worst of it is the rehab. They really make her work, and kneading the scar tissue to break up adhesions is uncomfortable, but she is glad she had it done. Quote

Super User Marty Posted October 18, 2013 Super User Posted October 18, 2013 Good luck. That sounds incredible that there's a possibility of fishing three weeks after surgery. Hope it happens. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted October 19, 2013 Super User Posted October 19, 2013 My grandfather was an athlete all through high school and was offered a scholarship to Penn State for football which he turned down to work at the steel mill to provide for the family. His knees were shot, he could walk around but not without pain. He had both of his knees replaced and was able to play basketball with me afterwards It was tough for the first few weeks but for him, it seemed like it just kind of got better real quickly after a little while with pain so i am hoping the same for you. Good luck!! 1 Quote

RAMBLER Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 I had arthroscopic surgery on both knees, but that was nothing. My wife had both knees replaced. Most important thing is the therapy afterwards. The day after she was released from the hospital, she was walking a little bit more each day. I was a taskmaster (tough love) and she doubled up on the therapy. The doctor couldn't believe how fast she recovered. Oh, by the way, she was 69 years old at the time. We know of one guy that had his replaced and only did a little therapy twice a week when the home visiting therapist showed up to check his progress. He will never bend that knee, again. We know another friend that had a knee replaced and she was walking around the hospital the next day. A lot of recovery depends on attitude. Good luck and hope you get to fishing real soon. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted October 20, 2013 Super User Posted October 20, 2013 A little more info about my sister-in-law. When she got home, she could not leave here home except to visit the doctor's office. She was not to go away from home until cleared by the doctor to do so. She had in home therapy rehab. Had she left home against the doctor's orders, and a problem ensued, according to Medicare, she would have been liable for the entire medical costs and would have had to repay Medicare for what they had paid out. So, be careful to scrupulously follow your doctor's instructions. To do otherwise is folly. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted October 20, 2013 Super User Posted October 20, 2013 My neighbor had her's replaced and was walking up and down stairs in a couple weeks. She was around 70 and about 50lbs overweight. My uncle had his done and whined the whole time, sat around and ate his pain meds, took about six months for him to walk stairs, but he got there. Both operations were within the last 5 years, allot will depend on your attitude and pain tolerances, good luck. Quote
