JT Bagwell Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 I did Insanity this Spring and was very lean by the time I finished. Then came Summer and I did not exercise at all. I noticed my stomach was getting kind of flabby so I went to my local Max Muscle store and had them measure my body fat percentage. I came in at almost 20% which is crazy. I also noticed that I got tired much faster when fishing and felt sore at the end of the day. So tonight I am going to start Insanity again and I had the guy at my local Max Muscle put together a good regimen of Protein, Pre-Workout drinks and vitamins. If anyone is interested in getting in shape before next fishing season we could keep this thread going and post updates about our success, tips and what supplements and workouts are working for us. Let me know if you are interested and I will try to post once or twice a week. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted October 17, 2013 Super User Posted October 17, 2013 I am in....i had an injury to my shoulder that prevented me from working out and then i started classes but i definitely don't have the energy i once did so it is time to get back at it. Super User jbsoonerfan Posted October 17, 2013 Super User Posted October 17, 2013 Why not just eat healthy and exercise? Are you going to take supplements the rest of your life? Places like GNC and Max Muscle or whatever love to see guys like you spend $200 for a months worth of supplements. You could buy fruits and vegetables and lean meat and accomplish the same thing without having to put all that junk in your body. 3 Quote

You are right I am sure they would like you to spend $200 per month that doesn't mean you have to. I sure don't and the place I go doesn't try to up-sell me on anything either. Sometimes you can't get enough of what you need from just eating right. Especially if you are very busy and very physically active. I don't think there is anything wrong with taking protein, vitamins and things of that nature. So in conjunction with my exercise program (Insanity) I am going to take my supplements to try to get as physically fit as I can. Hopefully this time I don't become a big slacker for 3 months afterwards. 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 17, 2013 Super User Posted October 17, 2013 I started losing weight in January when I weighed 390#. At the time of my radiation for prostate cancer started I lost 70# by july. I did this by eating one frozen waffle for breakfast, a half sandwich for lunch (tuna in water) mixing mustard with a little mayo. For supper I had half of what I usually ate, no bread. For snacks inbetween I had those 100 calorie bag of cookies or a few pretzels or some fresh fruit. I was allowed a 2,000 calories but I kept it between 1,200/1,400 calories. I lost weight so fast it threw my meds off. I was able to reduce some meds and stop taking other ones. My cancer doctor told me to stop losing weight till my cancer treatments were over. So right now I'm back at it again. When I was logging full time I was never under 290#. My problem was when I took an inside job my appetite stayed. Even though I stayed logging part time. I just wasn't burning up the calories. Now I know what I have to do and stay focused. It's everything in moderation, fresh fruit, tuna w/70 calorie bread. I drink only water no more diet coke. I found this very easy to do. My goal is to lose weight slowly now. I figure another 20# by Christmas and another 25/30# by bass fishing season in the spring. If I can do it anyone can. I'm sticking with what I know works this time. LOL! I took them for 4 years, was in great shape! Then the wife, kid, an life came along and I realized that I couldn't take supplements for the rest of my life. To me, that is sort of what these P90x, Insanity, etc type fads are, quick fixes. I'm 6'1" and weighed 175lbs when I graduated HS in 1998. By 2000, I was working out, lifting, playing b-ball 3 times a week, taking supplements, exercising, etc. I got to 205 and was in great shape. I kept this up till 2004 when I met my future wife. We got married in 05, had a Son in late 05 and I gained 40 lbs. I weighed 245 in 2006. I SLOWELY lost weight due to eating healthier and exercising. I have weighed between 215 - 225 ever since. I am probably "overweight" by Dr standards, but I am not fat. I wore a 34" waist jean in 2000 and now I wear a 36". I could probably still wear a 34", but I don't want to rip the a** out when I bend over. To me that is why people these days "get in shape, then get fat" It's a never ending cycle until you find a healthy weight. Quote

Its just too much work to maintain at that weight. Until I tore the upper head off my right bicep I was looking good. I was around 260 to 265 solid. I was also banging tons of juice too though. I got off the juice and dropped to 253 over a 4 month span. I was travelling a lot at the time and couldnt maintain work and lifting. My weight finally settled out at 245. Thats where it stayed for about a year and a half. Once my bicep tore I ballooned to 330. Ive been fighting my way back for the last year and a half. Healthy eating has always played an enourmous part in getting and staying in shape. Quote

If you stick with anything be it a diet change or a workout regimen it is not a fad. Sounds to me like you are making excuses for changing your weight and not sticking to your workout plan and diet. I am pretty lucky in that my weight doesn't change to much but my body composition does. I range anywhere from 195-205 depending on how much cycling i am doing. I will agree that weight doesn't matter to much it is more about your body fat % which unfortunately is something that is not easy to measure. I know for me i am so busy now with school and work and a family that i really need to work out no matter what it takes to get my energy level higher than normal. I will also be taking whey protein and whatever else tickles my fancy because even if it doesn't work physically the mental aspect always helps. Quote

Fish Chris Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 Jt, you said > my body fat percentage. I came in at almost 20% which is crazy. < Ha ! After my initial 80 lb weight loss, at which point, I weighed 189 lbs, my BF % was still 23% ! I've went through several bulks and cuts since then. Right now I'm bulking again. Weighing 220 at about 12%. After my last cut, I was weighing 208 at very close to 10% Never been that lean in my life ! Can't wait to cut off all the body slime next Spring I've gotten to a point where I can put my cut and bulk weights on a 12 month calendar, and then just flat out make it happen. Took close to 50 years, but I finally have 100% control over my weight... regarding the fat anyway If I could make muscle grow at will, the way I can make fat disappear, I'd be about 300lbs@8% Supplements..... eh... I'm kind of middle of the road on them. I agree that whey protein can help make it easier to get your 1-2gms per lb of body weight, per day. But ya' know, I eat 10 jumbo egg whites every morning for breakfast.... some kind of protein tuna, chicken, whatever with lunch, and a 16-24oz serving of meat, (chicken, fish, pork, sometimes steak) every single day of the year. I use to eat more protein shakes, bars, etc, but I find it pretty easy to get my 200-220gm's of protein daily, without it. The only other "legal" supplement out of all of the hundreds or thousands of them, which their is hard core proof that it works, is creatine.... and wouldn't you freaking know it ? I'm the one guy out of how every many hundred, that cannot tolerate creatine Okay granted, if a person had money, and were getting up in there years, they could go see Dr. Jeffery Life Oh no ! He's not on steroids.... it's hormonal replacement therapy LOL Alright bro.... Peace, Fish Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 17, 2013 Super User Posted October 17, 2013 Once I reached adult hood it was time to get rid of the baby fat and there was plenty of it. I liked nice clothes and women, fat was not where it's at. Once I got into the scrap business much of the work was physical, even increasing my food intake the pounds melted off quickly. For a good 30 years my weight stayed pretty much the same, I did have a gym in basement and had a workout routine too. I discovered I was a diabetic 4 years ago, dropped quite a bit of weight and I was sick. Between my medication and a healthy diet my sugar levels are controlled and I gained weight back pretty much to where I was. I don't work out at all any more, but I do stay fit. I walk the beach a mile or 2 each morning fishing, the soft sand and casting for a couple hours keeps me pretty limber, my legs are in good shape and my casting muscles are good too, I don't get tired or sore because I do it every day. At 68 being active and feeling good is enough for me, not interested in looking like body builders. I weigh about 135#, doubt I will ever gain any significant weight. Quote
JT Bagwell Posted October 17, 2013 Author Posted October 17, 2013 Good thread so far guys. To some degree I do agree that the highly marketed programs (P90X, Insanity, etc) are a fad. However, I don't do them to be popular (some people do). I do them because they work. The programs are really difficult but like I said, they work. I tried the egg white thing a few years ago only to be violently ill. I waited a few days before I tried it again and once again, violently ill. Great way to find out you are allergic to eggs. lol I was 34-35 at the time and had no clue I was allergic to them. Quote
aceman387 Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 I mainly eat "live" foods and stay away from any boxed or processed items that are loaded with additives and preservatives. I like to eat smaller portions 4-5 times a day and eat about every three hours to keep my metabolism running.I will either prepare my meals the night before or early in the morning before work and put them in ziploc containers and take them with me. As far as exercises i like to do basic compound exercises like squats, bench presses, power cleans a lot of chin ups and hill sprints but i will change up my routine often to keep it fresh.I am not into body building, but prefer to eat healthy and exercise to stay strong and be healthy as i get older. 2 Quote
Nice_Bass Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 Soccer matches 2x's a weeks still some weeks and cross fit style training in-between and I think I am in the best shape of my life at 30 so far- even better than when in college. Recently took 5th over all in a warrior dash. I also think that the cross fit style training is the best type there is- much of the other hub-bub around it I am not into at all. That stuff has a cult-like following around these parts, and many others. 1 Quote

JT, just so you know, I'm not talking about a big gulp full of raw egg whites..... or even just "plain" poached egg whites. My egg whites are total flavor bombs ! I usually leave in 1-3 yolks, then season with season salt, black pepper, and some kind of McCormacks stuff like maybe molasses and bacon, or Smokehouse maple..... scrambled, then I pour sugar free syrup all over them. Bam ! Alergic to eggs ? Hopefully you can still eat stuff with a little egg in it.... Peace, Fish PS, JT > To some degree I do agree that the highly marketed programs (P90X, Insanity, etc) are a fad. Its totally up to the individual, with whether they can stick to it tightly enough, but yes, if they can, these programs can be very effective. Granted, so can "any" program which brings up your heart and lung rate, and taxes your muscles.... pretty much daily. IMPO, most people get WAAAY too caught up in which is better... this program, or that one, this exercise or that one, this exercise, or that one, etc, etc..... When in reality, what's far more important is that your still exercising and eating healthy, next month, next year, and EVERY freaking year, for the rest of your life, that you want to be healthy. Super User bigbill Posted October 17, 2013 Super User Posted October 17, 2013 Fresh fruit like peaches, pears and Apple's keeps things moving sort of speak. As we get older that really matters. I just went to buckle my belt today and found it short inches from the last hole on the belt so my method of losing weight is spot on again. If I can hit 300# by Christmas, if I survive thanksgiving and Christmas my goal by spring will be achieved. When I was logging and In 10 degree weather I had the 24" trees knotched and back cut yet they were frozen. Many times I put the saw down and pushed them over to fell them. I was a big strong active guy. I could fell trees and buck them up into firewood length and have a cord of firewood on the ground in 50 minutes. At the local fair in speed cutting I could do six slices and bore two threw holes with a 100cc chainsaw in 17.5 seconds. My point is I'm a big guy but not lazy by any means. On my day off it wasn't watching tv I was servicing my saws and equipment for the start of next week's cut. Even in going full bore logging for over six months I never went under 290#. When I went to work for the elevator company I would carry 250# rails by myself. One day I installed a 321# sheave(pulley) by myself when the lifting crane didn't go high enough. I installed it by hand. I'm still here because I don't smoke or drink but I love good food. My wife is an excellent cook and her home made pasta and baked goods are awesome. I didn't get fat eating junk food. I still enjoy the good food but eat less. It's everything in moderation. You need to have a strong will too. Remember to snack every two hours between meals. Eat your meals at the sametime. Then snack a little inbetween so your not too hungry at the meals. All you need is vitamins. It's so easy once you make up your mind to commit to it. I only wish I did it sooner. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 17, 2013 Super User Posted October 17, 2013 I play drums around 2 hours a day. That combined with 20 minutes or so hanging from the chin up bar doing various pull ups, has kept me around a buck and a half wet. I stop doing these things, and back up to 200 I go. I guess I'm lucky in that I haven't had to try to hard to control my weight. Quote

And to find the combination that works best for ur body's metabolism. i like my buddies attitude on supplements: women buy make-up to feel younger. men buy supplements to feel stronger. unless ur going to compete as a professional body builder spend the cash on fishing. 1 Quote
