Spare Spool, Spinning Reel Rant

Totally blows the way economy is with spinning reels that now you don't get a spare spool like before, but the price of the spinning reel is the same.

 

It's like when you buy a grocery item, it's about the same price but you get less.

 

I like having that spare spool, so I have a spool with mono line and braided line.

 

Now if you want a spare spool, you have to order from the reel manufacturer and pay for almost a quarter of what the reel cost plus shipping for the spool. 

 

It seems we're getting less for what we are paying for. 

 

I haven't bought a new spinning reel just for that reason. It seems that all reel manufacturer's are not including a spare spool...that sucks

My abus all came with an extra spool, believe my pfluegers did too, my stradic fi's also did.  But you are right, many no longer do.  Where as the cost of an extra spool may be considerable to the consumer, the actually manufacturing cost probably is not all that significant.  Most likey raisng the MSRP a modest sum might satsify both them and us.  Every manufacturer that comes on board with this policy, in time that may will reduce the number of ones that do give an extra spool, it will be industry standard.

The spares were usually garbage anyway.  Didn't have the same drag set up as the main spool, or were made entirely of plastic.

My '70's D.A.M. Quick spinning reels came with an extra bail spring. I have some older reels where the extra spool is still wrapped in the original box. But your mono &braid isn't a bad idea.

My Pfleugers have all metal spare spools.  They may not be bored out, but that's an aesthetics thing.

The new Abu Revo spinning reels come with a spare aluminum spool. I just checked mine and the drag components are the same as the primary spool.

I have carried a couple loaded spare spools in the boat for a dozen years, and I don't ever recall using one.

Not a real concern for me.  I would rather keep the same price for a newer reel than get a spool that sits in my gear storage.

No spare spool just gives me an excuse to buy a new rod and reel.

Let me throw a little marketing out here for a minute. I was very lucky to work for a premier consumer electronics manufacturer for many years. One thing about non-essential consumables is that 'everything' has to be better/faster/lighter for their next product cycle in attempt to better their competition. With respect to consumer electronics, this tactic has forced price points and margins downward for decades. I've not followed fishing reel pricing, but I see parallels where reels, in this case are designed to fit into specific price points, like products my former company did. With ever increasing business costs in personnel, HR, and manufacturing, I can see reel manufacturers omitting an extra spool where years ago they may have included it.

I have two Pfleuger Presidents that didn't come with spare spools but BPS advertises the Supreme XT as including a spare spool, which is nearly 3x the President's price point.

I've only swapped spools on my Quantum a couple of times in 20 years, but if you swap spools frequently, it'd be worth an call/e-mail to your reel manufacturer to see if you can buy one.

Quite true in some cases, I have second spools that are graphite and not aluminum.  As a rule I do not use the spare spool, with 1 exception.  I fish braid, many of the drift boats down here do not allow braid being used, when I go on those boats I will use the spare with mono on it.

You can buy spares relatively inexpensively direct from the manu.  Most spools are less than $50.

I've been known to carry a couple extra baitcaster spools in my tackle bag.   I think the last time was when I fished the Eastern Divisionals as a non-boater on Champlain.   Needed to save as much room as possible, but wanted to have extra spooled up line just in case.
