Vegetation And Punching

I was wondering if Coontail is a canopy type vegetation, and thus can be punched.

In Kansas I know we have Milfoil, Coontail, water willow cat tails, and scarce tire sized pads.

I usually squarebill or buzzbait over the submerged coontail, pitch up next to the willow, and pitch next to cattails.

Any other methods Im missing out on here?

We have alot of Coontail on Toledo Bend, its as productive as Hydrilla.

I was wondering is it canopied or if it was just weeds straight down to the roots.

Not like Milfoil or Hydrilla but it can be dense enough to require punching.

Usually the coontail around here (WNY) grows deeper than the milfoil, but this year I noticed a lot of thick patches of it in shallow. It formed very thick "mini" mats. I have punched, frogged, and flipped the heck out of them all year since I first saw them and have hauled water............they still like the matted milfoil better. Which is odd, because if you can find deep green stands of coontail out side the milfoil, it can often be lights out on that. I did notice those little shallow patches were so dense that often a 1oz. sinker would not get through, and when it did it was thick all the way to the bottom. Maybe because it was in shallow water  and there was no "room" to move under them, but for some reason I have not caught crap out of it. Some of my best milfoil mats you can walk across, but once you get through it, it's quite open underneath.

That makes me feel better. LOL. What the heck is pepper grass? We have eel grass here. It's fantastic looking stuff, but they don't use it much.

I've got mats so thick, there's barely room for a bass to hold.  I fish from shore, so I get very few opportunities to pitch into water deeper than three feet given the shallow banks I work with.

Try working a swim jig overs the mats, works for me.
