Im looking to get a new spinnerbait rod what size and weight do you guys suggest?

If you suggest a specific rod try to keep the price range around 130

depends where you'll be fishing, but anywhere from a 6'8 to a 7'3 rod is good, a MH Fast tip will work well. 15lb fluorocarbon is good overall line.

some good rods around $100 St.Croix Mojo, Abu Garcia Veritas, *** ***,

$50 Berkley lightning shock rod  in 7' MH will be an excellent spinnerbait rod.  then you'll have some $$ leftover for a reel

Doesn't take a super expensive rod to be a good spinnerbait rod. I prefer something in the 6-6.5 foot range in a medium or medium/heavy with a fast action. Personally I use a 6' 6" MH/F LTB but I have a 6' 6" M/F Mojo that fishes a spinnerbait just as well for $150 less.

Can we get by with one spinner bait rod only? I throw a few smaller spinnerbaits where a bait caster wouldn't work. I figure a 6' med spinning outfit would handle the lighter spinnerbaits. Now will one bait casting setup handle the spinnerbaits from 3/8oz to 1oz properly? I probably have heavier ledge busters too. Not to confuse anyone but do we need three spinner bait setups to handle all the spinner bait sizes and weights? Or do we just target the 3/8 to 3/4oz spinnerbaits.

I just picked up a Berkley lightening shock rod and it's a nice rod for the $$.

You buy a rod that fits the specs of what you'll be throwing. My spinnerbait rod is a 6'9 mh/f that has the specs of 3/8-1oz.

MF/F I like 6'6" for general use. I have a 5'6" that I use for springtime when I'm picking the bank structure apart from close range. Depending on the reel you have, I have used 1/4 ouncers successfully on a 7' medium.

My personal choices are a 6ft/6" MH for 1/4oz thru 3/8oz in tight areas.

Where theres alittle more throwing room,i like my 7ft/MH for 3/8 thru 3/4oz.

Both rods are Cabelas XML casting. Bought them 3yrs ago, they are some

great rods!

No need to spend big bucks on a spinnerbait rod unless you want to. I use Lightning Rod Shocks, they are fantastic for the $$ and are great reaction bait rods. I fish spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, chatterbaits, swimjigs, skinny dipper type swimbaits, square bills, ripping lipless crankbaits out of grass, top waters, jerkbaits and frogs with mine. For spinnerbait specific use, I use the 6'6" M with 20lb braid for 3/16 + 1/4 oz spinnerbaits, and the 7'MH with 50lb braid for 3/8 + 1/2 oz. spinnerbaits. I used to fish all that stuff with various $250 St Croix Legend Tournaments, and they didn't do any of those things any better than the Lightning Rods. I am even going to get a couple more, so I can just have multiple baits rigged up and ready to go.

100% AGREE with ww2farmer! The only reason im using the XMLs,is that i got the on sale for 39.99 at the time.

I keep talking myself out of getting those shock rods, but every time im in walmart,i got to go play with them.

For simple chuck & wind sensitivity is less of a factor, but to feel the blades thump, ticking grass etc. a better blank is useful. I typically build spinnerbait rods the same blank as a jig/plastics rod.

All of the above can be felt just fine on a Lightning Rod Shock. I was fishing a 3/16 oz. spinnerbait today with a #3.5 willow blade, and could feel it turning in choppy water with 15+ MPH winds. I could also feel every blade of eel grass or stem of milfoil it touched just fine, and some of my biggest bites today came when I popped free. If people can't feel that stuff on cheap equipment, I don't know how better stuff is going to work for them, something is getting lost in translation from the hand to the brain.

I'll throw a spinnerbait on any rod I own.  One combo I've been using strictly for spinnerbaits (so far) is one I got for my grandson.  I've been throwing a 1/2 oz. with Colorado blades almost exclusively.  The rod is a 6' MH Berkley Lightning (not the Shock).  This lure vibrates the rod (and reel) right from the beginning of the retrieve.  Rod $17.  Casting distance isn't too shabby with that weight either using the Daiwa Procaster I got him.  Reel $30.  Lucky me.....he prefers to stay with spinning.  I need to buy him a couple more casting outfits.  :teeth:

EDIT:  Why spend $130 on a rod when much less will work just as well?

Yea I agree, I use my flippin stick 7'6 for spinnerbaits as well .. it has a fast tip, good backbone, and launches them.. but I use bigger spinnerbaits..

I prefer a glass or composite rod for a spinnerbait, like I do with any tight line, faster retrieve lure except a hard jerkbait. I use a 7' medium BPS Crankin Stick for 1/4 ounce spinnerbaits and they cast great on a baitcast reel. I use the 7' MH BPS crankin' stick for 3/8 ounce spinnerbaits or heavier. Go with 12 pound or lighter line for the 1/4 ounce spinnerbaits, or you can use heavy line, say 20 pound test, for the 3/8 ounce spinnerbaits to keep them shallower.
