JeziHogg Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 Whats the difference between the STCI41000FA and the STCI41000FAML besides the drag and a small amount of line capacity? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 15, 2013 Super User Posted October 15, 2013 It's designed specifically for light braid. Period. It's also .2 oz. lighter. I can't see this reel being used widespread for bass fishing at all. Quote
JeziHogg Posted October 15, 2013 Author Posted October 15, 2013 So the STCI41000FA would be better for a DS w/ 6 lb fluorocarbon I'm assuming? Quote

TiNuts Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 The only difference I could see was the FA spool was a little bigger than the FAML and it wasn't by much. Just enough to be noticeable while knowing there was a difference. I didn't see any difference that would make it more suited for microbraid than the other. Quote

I would move up to the 2500 for fluoro, but that's my preference to have a bigger spool. It does two things: faster retrieve, which is helpful in the deep water I generally fish, and the line (6# Tatsu or Invisx, to be specific) is easier to manage. I have a few Daiwa 1500 series reels, which are similar to the Shimano 1000 in diameter, and while it can be done, fluoro is a lot easier on larger spools. As always, KVD L&L is a must, on any size spool. Quote
Gaerith Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 I think the fml models are more aimed at trout type fishing on a light/ ultralight rod. Quote
Jerry in SC Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 I think the fml models are more aimed at trout type fishing on a light/ ultralight rod. The ML reels are nearly identical to Japanese "Area" type reels. They have very shallow spools, my Shimano Cardiff Ci4 2000 SS holds under 100 yards of 4lb (.006") mono. Japanese "Area" fishing consists of lure fishing for trout in ponds. I've seen some monsters brought to net in videos on Shimano's Japanese website. Works great for trout fishing in small streams.
