je1946 Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 Rumor floating on another site of Northern Bass Supply located in Brentwood, NH being bought by Tackle Warehouse. Anyone else know anything about this? Quote
mhtranger Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 I'm not sure I would like this. I hope its not true! Quote
Backwoodsbasser Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 That's unlikely considering its a small family owned shop that does well with what they have going on between being the only specialized bass fishin shop around and they're tournament trail. They may however become associated with tackle warehouse for product and sponsors. Quote
Tlaz Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 There is a BPS opening in Hookset which is about a half hour from NBS in Brentwood. Wonder how that will impact their business. I go to NBS frequently because I live up the street but I will probably hit BPS more often than NBS. 1 Quote
Nashua Nev Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 as an owner of a small business myself. I will continue to use NBS and Granite State (in Nashua) and Wildlife in Manchester as much as i can. 1 Quote
Super User Shane J Posted January 14, 2014 Super User Posted January 14, 2014 He was actually saying the opposite, there Nev. I'm actually moving into BPS. 2 Quote
llPa1nll Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 I have been going to NBS for almost 20 years now. Gary and Sandy have always taken care of me, and have gone above and beyond what any big box tackle store would do for their customers. I have not been going there as often as I would like because, well I have not been able to get out as much as I would like. I would urge fellow fishermen in the state to check them out and give them a try, support your local businesses. They are always helpful and will give you some tips to put some extra fish in the boat. I am not affliated with them in anyway, just a happy customer looking to support local businesses. Take care and tight lines. 4 Quote
Super User Shane J Posted January 17, 2014 Super User Posted January 17, 2014 I hear what you're saying, llPa1nll, and I'm jiggy with that. They are nice folks in there. However, when it comes to sheer selection, the big boys can't be beat. I am all about supporting local business, though, whenever possible. Quote
Tlaz Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Ill still go to NBS as needed but when its time to stock up, Im hitting BPS. Quote
AQUA VELVA Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Iv'e ordered from NBS and was very satisfied. Sometimes you find interesting things that the big guys don't bother to carry. I do a lot of buying from BPS and Cabelas to and there are several good sporting goods stores not far from me. Sometimes it's nice to have a well stocked regional store like NBS that understands our bass fishing season. Quote
Will Wetline Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 I have been buying from NBS for 20 years and will continue to do so. Good people. Competitive prices. There is however, no argument that the really big guys like TW offer a broader selection, but if I can find what I want from northernbass.com they'll get my business. Quote
bass crazy Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Bringing this topic back up to to the top because I just learned today that Northern Bass Supply is closing its doors the end of March. Sandy said the business was sold and moving to Wallingford , Connecticut. There will be a retail store and online sales with a new website retaining the Northern Bass Supply name. I went in with a gift certificate to buy no lead jigs. I did get a few jigs. Sandy said as of July 2016 she could not sell lead lures in NH so that is why the buisness is sold. Lead lures can be sold in Connecticut. There may be other reasons for selling out. But probably a smart business decision if you can not sell all the products. Going to be interesting to see how the big retailers handle the no lead sale laws. Will have to do more online shopping now. Sandy and Gary feel as if most fisherman will still use the lead lures. So the loonies and state government forced Northern Bass Supply out of the state. Quote
Dogmatic Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I call BS, for lead regulations as a reason why any tackle business would close. There's a thing called tungsten, superior to lead, in almost all applications, and many fisherman are already naturally switching. Quote
llPa1nll Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I knew this was coming but Im sad to have such a great store for bass fishing go out of state. Gary and Sandy have always been great to me and I wish them the best. Much love for NBS! Quote

There's a thing called tungsten, superior to lead, in almost all applications, and many fisherman are already naturally switching. How many different types of jigs can you buy made from tungsten? Hardly any. I believe part of legislation that passed when the use of certain size lead weights were banned, was that retailers had to completely stop selling lures made from lead. Don't quote me on that though. I'm sure if you look into it you can find out more specific information. Quote

I do believe you're right though when it comes to the ban, all lead is banned, so lead encased in swimbaits, for example, would preclude that bait from being used. These types of baits would be harder to replace with "non-lead" counterparts. That a shop would go under because of a ban on a specific material is BS however, something very "faulty" in their business model, or there are other mitigating circumstances. Outside pressures like really short season in NH, internet, and big box stores(like a BPS, as mentioned) are more likely factors. As an example, did waterfowl hunting cease when they banned lead shot? Mshutta Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Well, as far as jigs, you would be wrong. Any jig made in lead now has a "non-lead" counterpart What I meant by "hardly any" was that there may be only one or two brands that make each type.. we don't have nearly the same amount of options as lead jigs do; and they aren't cheap. I know a lot of people in NH, VT, MA that DO NOT follow the new laws.. they aren't throwing away buckets of lures and replacing them with tungsten ones. they can't afford to. When they can't afford to, they don't buy them from Northern Tackle. I'm not trying to argue, or say they are closing for one reason or another, but saying that I'm sure the lead ban in NH could have severely effected their profits. (And so could a BPS or Cabelas.. lol) Quote
clane1844 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 This is awful news I was looking forward to fishing in some of their tourneys this year. I was wondering why they only have one on Lake Champlain this year...Its all making sense. Their current website is hacked and it all seemed peculiar. As for the Lead ban in NH....That sucks here in NY its getting bad as well! pretty soon it will be 10,00 for a drop shot sinker! Thanks for the Info! Quote

Joe over at Granite State Rod and Reel is a great guy. Shop is a bit tight but he has that place packed with stuff, does great work on rods and reels, and always has great stories to tell. Quote
CLRinSNH Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Sandy sold NBS but will still be working for the company that bought them, they are re-branding as Tackle Supply Depot (www.tacklesupplydepot.com) which will open soon. Sandy will continue to run the Northern Bass Tournament trail and currently has 7 permits pulled for 2015: May 3 - Big Squam May 9 - Winnipesaukee June 21 - Ossipee July 12 - Connecticut River August 16 - Winnisquam October 4th - Winnipesaukee October 10-11 - TOC at Winnipesaukee I'm sure she'll probably have a couple more (in VT/MA/ME) but that is what is on the NH Fish & Game website so far. mhtranger Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Do you know if she is keeping the store open? Quote
AQUA VELVA Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Iv'e ordered things from NBS that I had not seen in other catalogs or web sites. I'm glad to hear that they will still be in business somewhere, though. Quote

I picked up a 2015 tournament flyer about a month or so ago when I was in the shop and there are a few more dates. I do not have it in front of me, but there is a 2 day tournament up at Sebago towards the end of the year. It will count for double points, and they have a pretty good deal with a resort up there for 2 nights and food for a little more than the tournament entry fee. Quote
