Anyone Else Throw A Square Bill Almost All Year

i love the square bill and seem to catch fish on it all year round, late spring being best.  anyone else use a square bill will success all year round?

Dead of winter is probably about the only time I don't throw one much.  Any other time I always have at least 1 tied on.

I like the KVD 2.5 but I cant find them around here with a rattle. I need a rattle in that 2.5! I throw it once in awhile. Usually, in Florida, you are picking apart cover and shorelines but sometimes I throw a crank bait in between grass lines, grass pockets, etc. All year long. Whenever I get that little voice that says, "Hey... guy, look.... throw that 2.5 through there for a little bit."

yep my second favorite bait to use. If i cant cath them on anything else i know for sure i can catch them on a square bill especially the kvd 2.5 in sexy shad

I have a SK 4S in Green Gizzard Shad tied on right now. I run ghost or more life like colors in warmer weather and a craw red or brown pattern in the cold. I don't crank much anymore, but I have a SB on almost always.

Are you guys keeping them tied on for when you see shallow structure to throw them around or what? I ask because I have a few kvd 1.5s but I barely ever tie one on simply because they run so shallow. Other than laydowns and things like that I find it hard to find areas that are shallow enough for them to dig into the bottom and what not. So what do you look for when deciding to throw a SB instead of a crank that dives a little deeper?

If I am fishing from the shore, I look at what is in the water.  I'm not going to be throwing a deep diver if the lake is shallow, or if it has a lot of grass, tree limbs, etc. in it.  If the lake is deep and fairly open then I will start using baits that sink.

Kind of hard to fish them through the ice, but other than that, I have one tied on the rest of the year.

Any place there's 3-6 feet of water. Especially with weed or wood or rock or better yet, all three.

like everyone else is saying any time the water is shallow and there is some sort of structure is when square bills are at their prime

Getting the right one to rip across the top of submerged grass can work really well. I caught a couple earlier today doing this with a KVD 2.5.

I use the bomber crankbaits in all depths but the shallow A's rock all the time here. The redapplecraw seems to be the hottest color here but all the colors will catch fish at onetime or another. Right now I been throwing the citrus color in stained to muddy water conditions. Since these all float I get jiggy with it by letting it pause over submerged weeds and twitching it over the open weed pockets. Even the older colors still work with awesome success there still one of my top go to baits.

If you can still find the bomber FAT A in any color grab it. If it's in red, Brown, green, firetiger. Etc if it has the Orange bottom get them for that's a big plus with any crankbait. Even when slow reeled so it's just under the surface that fine toned rattle rings the dinner bell. Don't forget to wear your polarized glasses so you don't miss the action when the fish bolts out of the weeds to strike your crankbait. Like the turtle man says it's live action.

I started using squarebills this summer and have done well with them.

 

I switch between a Baker Lures RGD1 (about 3') and RGD2 (about 6'). Same body size between the two just different bills.

 

I cast the RGD1 as close to shore, rocks, and retaining walls as possible and twitch it a few times like a jerkbait. These cranks suspend and get hammered pretty hard when paused.

 

The RGD2 I use along shore or under tree branches on steeper banks.

 

I can cover alot of ground this way and find active fish. They will get followed often so dont forget to pause and erratic rod and reeling action is key.

 

If you have bought or might buy these Bake cranks, you MUST make sure they have rattles in them. If not they were manufactured wrong and wont suspend at all. Unfortunately a bunch like this made it into the market and warehouses.

 

I'm looking foward to using these in the winter and spring along side my LC Pointer.
