Low Cost Heavy Line Spinning Reel Recommendations

  OK, my three main reels are a Shimano Sahara with eight pound mono, a Shimano Symetre with ten pound mono line and a Shimano Chronarch with twelve pound mono line.  I go after bass only right now.  

 

Here is the thing - I want to ditch the baitcaster and replace it with a spinning reel.  I'm going to keep the baitcaster and will keep using it but only occasionally.  I really love the performance of spinning reels and for the areas I fish I'm starting to see less and less need for a baitcaster and the troubles that seem inherent in them.  With my two spinning reels I can cast for distance and accuracy both light, very light, medium and slightly heavy lures.  

 

I want to replace the baitcaster with twelve pound mono with a spinning reel with twelve pound mono.  I'm not wanting to spend a lot either on a new spinning reel - $60 to $110.00. 

 

So does anybody have any suggestions on a low price but good spinning reel in the twelve pound mono line range that would be good for bass?  I would like the reel to be able to handle twelve pound and up: twelve, fourteen and sixteen.  

 

Any recommendations?

Well there's braid, 20lb line should do the trick for almost everything.

If you want bigger mono on spinning reels all you need is a bigger spinning reel. You can start with 4000 size, then look at the more popular saltwater reels that can range up to the 10,000+ size

Shimano Sahara or Symetre 4000 will work just fine but you could go with a 2500 or 3000 size of either and slap some 20lb braid on them and have much more trouble free fishing than even 12lb line will give you.

Agree with the above.  First of all I would select 15# braid over any mono, if for no other reasons line twist and coiling.  It is not an issue of brand, for 60-110 many reels will fit the bill.  This is an issue of spool size and IMO 12# mono or copoly is close to the upper limits for a 4000 reel.  For bass and many other freshwater species a 4000 size would be the biggest I'd go, many 5000 reels are 18 oz and up.  I do have a couple that are closer to 14 oz but they are out of your price range, and I don't feel they are conducive for bass fishing, nor would I want to use a mono line over 14#.  Another issue is going to be trolling your mono out after each outing for best performance, if this is not possible go with braid.

I like the 40 size reels for bigger stuff on spinning gear, and like everyone else said I'd just make the leap to superlines. One of my favorite rigs has a 40 size Pflueger President spooled with 6/20 Sufix Braid - I use a 12 or 14 pound fluoro leader becuase I either throw medium size swimbaits or swimming jigs with it. Inexpensive reel that has really held up to some abuse for 5 years.

I run a 35 size pflueger templar and a 40 size President XT. They came with two spools, one spool with 30# braid and another with 10# pound mono, 12 pound won't be a problem. Great reels for the price, there are 3 models of Pfluegers in your price range.

Most 3000 series reels are 2500 series bodies with a larger spool.  Braid is the key.  15-20# - 2500 series.  30-50# - 3000 series.  4000's could work but,  I think can tend to be a little large for a typical bass rods.

we use 4000 reels for 60 pound tarpon and 50 pound snook. a 2500 or even a 3000 will do

Right now I been throwing the same topwater lure I use with my 3000 sized reels with the same 6'6" rod just as far with my 2000 reel. So between the two different size spinning reels using the same length stick there pretty much equal in casting using 8# test copolymer.

If I was considering a new spinning reel it would be Okuma Helios series, about $140.

I would look at the Quantum Kinetic 30 and you should look into  "HALO .07" braided serving from BCY fibers for your line. I'ts a serving made for  bow strings. The manufacture is  from CT. I've been in the string business 27 years and never even thought to use this stuff. However it's super small, has a 30lb rating and will cast a mile. Trust me on this 1. This is the finest braid made in the US. PERIOD. Back the reel with some 12lb mono and than fill the rest with the HALO. You wont be sorry. Hope this helps
