CC268 Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 Alright...well at this point I may just get 3 different colors of the Original Black Series in 3/8 and 1/2 ounce and 3 colors of the Flip & Swim...or the Hair Jig...haven't decided between those two yet. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted October 14, 2013 Super User Posted October 14, 2013 I chose 3 colors (what was mentioned above) in the Football Black Series and 2 or 3 colors in the Flip & Swim. So far the river doesn't seem to be too rocky where I have been fishing, so maybe the Original Black Series and Flip & Swim (or the Hair Jigs) would be a better combo??? I do A LOT of skipping under trees, so maybe you are right, maybe I should switch the football heads out for the original Black Series...  Do you think it is worth getting both 3/8 ounce and 1/2 ounce in each of these colors or just like 3/8 ounce??  Football and Brush or Alien head jigs will get guys to arguing like a Coke and Pepsi debate which Pepsi wins hands down lol. Brian prefers Football and mnbassman23 prefers brush head. Both buys have earn tons of respect with fishing jigs. Each have their place, but it boils down to personal preference.  The hair jigs are made to be fished slow in cold weather when the bass are not active. If Chris switched then to brush heads, I'd buy them with a brush head.  For my style of fishing, I go 1/2oz almost always and the 3.8 I use for finesse only. Quote
CC268 Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 Hahaha....Oh man...Alright well I have established I am getting 3 Flip & Swim Jigs...3/8 ounce or 1/2 ounce (haven't decided which). The Flip&Swim jigs should cover the grassy areas. I guess it is between football or the alien style heads...either way I will make sure to get both 3/8 and 1/2 ounce jigs for those. Quote

CC268 Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 I mean I guess one last thing....I skip a lot of my lures on the river under trees and cover...I think that maybe the Alien head will just be a better overall jighead for what I need and then having the Flip & Swim Jig to cover the grass and thick cover...I figure that should cover everything...am I wrong? Â I am thinking of maybe getting 3/8 oz and 1/2 oz for the Black Series and maybe just the 1/2 oz for the Flip & Pitch...?? Quote

Ask way brother! Its what this place is for.  The flip n swim is dual purpose jig so yes, it will work for most any conditions. as for skipping the Alien heads, I know they skip better than football heads for me, but I kinda suck at it. I have never really spent the time learning the technique as I have just skipped what ever I had tied on. I mean I skipped a Buick century across the river once so anything is possible lol  Hopefully someone else can chime in on that one for ya. Quote
CC268 Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 I mean...if the alien head is more versatile...then why wouldn't I choose it over the football head lol? Seems like alien head and flip & pitch might be the way to go Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted October 14, 2013 Super User Posted October 14, 2013 Personal preference mainly. Quote
CC268 Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 Well dang...I mean its not like if I buy the alien heads the fish are going to say "oh he didn't buy the football head I can't bite that one sorry"...worse comes to worse I place an order for the football heads if the alienheads don't catch fish.... I'm kinda hoping they aren't talking in all honesty lol , but you will catch fish on them. Quote
Brian Needham Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 the alien head is fine and kinda the best of both worlds. Â I use the football head and it works for my fishing.... that is my personal prefence. Â my main point is pick one and roll with it for a while, then expand as/when needed. Quote

Problem solved! I will be placing an order this evening for 3 colors in the Black Series in 3/8 and 1/2 ounce and 3 colors in the Flip & Swim in 3/8 ounce. Â Thanks for all the help guys its been awesome! Quote
sarcazmo Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 Nothing wrong with Siebert or Northstar. Â I've used both to great success. Â Might also want to take a look @ *** lures nujigs. Â Pretty much the only jig I throw anymore. Â Super resistant to snags, and the only jig that I've used that self rights itself so it almost never rolls on itside. Â As far as jig weights I'm partial to 3/8oz. Â This seems to be the sweet spot to me I'll fish it all the way down to 20ish feet of water. Â Any deeper and I'll normally upsize for better feel. Â Yea I have heard about ***...maybe I should give them a shot...I have just heard a lot about Siebert and Northstar...but I will check out the *** jigs. I am wondering if maybe I should just go with the 3/8 oz...especially with the trailer it should be plenty heavy...I don't fish anything deeper than 15 ft usually and most the time its like no deeper than 6 feet. CC268 Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 I may pick a few *** Jigs in 3/8 along with a few Northstar jigs...give them both a shot. Thanks for the heads up Quote
Brian Needham Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 if you are fishing current you want the 1/2 oz  funny story: I was fishing with some friends a few years ago. I was using a 3/8 oz northstar alien head as I recall, and I saw my line move so I set the hook...... after the 5th phantom hook set and my buddies laughing they asked what size I was using..... I said 3/8.......they said you gotta go 1/2 Needham, you are fishing current now.  Since it was my first time fishing current, I didn't know to upsize my jig, we were fishing 10 and less of water and the jig was never hitting bottom.  point of the story: If fishing current, there is no need to go less than 1/2oz IMO. mnbassman23 Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 my main point is pick one and roll with it for a while, then expand as/when needed. Well said. If you become addicted to jig like many of us you can expand from there. Quote

Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted October 14, 2013 Super User Posted October 14, 2013 i like to  fish with the lightest jig head possible for the conditions.. calm water i like my jig to fall slow.. if its windy on the pond or lake im at i go up to 3/8 and that's pretty much it for me Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 14, 2013 Super User Posted October 14, 2013 It seems to me you should simply use the same weight jig as the T-rig with the same colors and trailer until the bass stop biting that combo. Fishing a jig just to fish a jig when the T-rig is working is interesting. Tell me agian about your tackle, I didn't read this long thread. A jig is nothing but a hook with a ( lead ) molded onto it. The hook is very important, the head determines where you can effectively present the jig without hanging it up often. I don't believe either site sponsors offer tungsten jig heads? Tungsten is heavier, therefor smaller jig head verses hook size giving the jig more effective bite; more space between the haed and hook point. The down side of tungsten is cost, more expensive to make. Phenix Cody Myers signature jigs are excellent. Both of the sponsors offer well made jigs with premium hooks, can't go wrong. You want a stand up style stream line shape head, 1/4 to 3/8 oz for the Verde river, 1/2 oz if there is moderate current (3 to 4 mph). Tom. Quote
Brian Needham Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 I am just worried the 1/2 oz will fall too fast...honestly in most places I fish on the river it is very calm...I am not fishing in crazy current or anything.   fair enough..... what I call "current" may not be your definition of "current" and vice verse.  if you got a rage craw hanging off the back of it, all that flapping is going to slow it down some too.  its a hard call to make, as you are really getting into the realm where you will not know what REALLY works until you get out on the water. which is why I recommend just getting a few to start out with, learn what you like and more importantly DONT like, what fall rate suits you, what trailer suits you, ect ect.....these are things you simply cant learn on the internet. Somethings, like jig fishing you just have to experience. You'll find out what you like pretty quickly, once you do it some...... some of it may be exactly what I like, others maybe the direct opposite, but it all catches fish. Quote

If I don't stick to my guns at some point I will end up on here for weeks determining what jigs and weights to get.... 1 Quote

Super User rockchalk06 Posted October 15, 2013 Super User Posted October 15, 2013 Grab some Berkley Havoc Subwoofers in Watermelon red and Bama craw for your flip n swims too. They are cheap and I've found them to msme the best trailers for the swims! Quote
