Hey guys so I was wondering for weedless wacky fishing, what hooks would you recommend and in what size for 5in Senkos? I have been looking around and there are so many different styles its a bit hard to choose. I would prefer hooks without a weight on them. As I do not fish wacky in deeper water much.

Also often times when I am fishing wacky it seems the fish hook themselves thanks to the circle hooks. A lot of times I will cast it out with a lot of slack to give it the best action, then I realize there is a fish on it when I begin to reel in my slack. Of course there have been times also where I see the line jump and know then there is a fish on as well. I dont always pick up on the line jumping from the initial bite though, so my second question is, when using the weedless wacky hooks, how hard is it to ensure hook ups if you dont see the first hit, and do you need to set the hook? It seems a lot of the time I just start reeling when I feel the fish and dont do any type of hook set thanks to the exposed circle hooks. Thanks!

I use gamakatsu size 1 or something around there. I don't fish them any different than open hooks

Thanks for the reply I found a few different Gamakatsu hooks. Are you reffereing to the Weedless Drop/Splitshots, Wicked Wacky, or Wide Gap Finese Weedless?   I couldnt tell much of a difference between the weedless drop/splitshot and the wide gap, can someone explain that to me? Thanks again

I use the gammy wicked wacky and the circle hooks with the plastic thing that sits by the barb.

Which ones do you like better? Does one seem to out preform the other?

I use the Gamakatsu Wide Gap Finesse Weedless -- 2/0 or 3/0. Picked up a pack of black rubber washers/o-rings at Cabelas. Before that, I used my daughter's clear hair ties/rubber bands from CVS. You have to take the hair ties off after fishing or the salt in the senko will melt the tie off. Some people say you can get the washers cheaper at Home Depot.

I thought the wacky o-ring tube was stupid and I didn't want to spend the money on it. With the hair ties, I used those big plastic straws they have at Asian bubble-tea restaurants. Now I use the bottom half of those click pens that have the four colors inside. Both work great, although I guess the pen costs money. I "borrowed" my daughter's pen. :)

I may end up going with those wide gap finese ones, I saw them on TW and they had decent reviews. Haha yea the tube is way to expensive for no more than it does. I use half of a sharpie.

I use the Owner Wacky Weedless - 2/0.

The Gammy Wide Gap Finesse are -- IMHO -- the best weedless wacky hooks out there.

I have tried the Owner wacky weedless, but the guard is rather flimsy. That said, the hooks are excellent!

All that said above, I've begun experimenting with building my own weedless wacky hooks.

Normally I like 2, 1, and 1/0 hooks. I will use 2/0 for really big worms, but I've found the 1/0 sufficient for most big worms that I use, 5, 6".

For my own rigging, I use the Gammy Wide Gap 1/0, and use Malon-7 coated stainless cable from BPS in 20 lb test. I will usually wrap it around the shank with some braid, and use thin shrink wrap tubing to bind it. So far so good. 20lb was the sweet spot, 30 and 40 were just too stiff. Take it FWIW.

Thats really cool, I may look into trying to do my own as well. Thank you!

X2. I found that the plastic weedguard doesn't impede the hookset like those metal weedguards seem to. Wacky rigging a senko is probably my most versatile and productive technique when fishing from shore.

I like the VMC Ike approved weedless wacky hooks in a 1/0. Only weedless wacky hook I've ever had much success hooking up with.

I make my own weed guard hooks for Senkos using Octopus hooks.

IMHO, the shorter shank finess wide gap or its copies have the hook point and hook eye too close together and cause missed fish.

I use 1/0 gammy weedless split shot/drop shot hooks and haven't had a problem with hooking up. No need for a powerful hook set though with the octopus style hook, just simply reel down to the fish and put some tension on it.

Try the Falcon weedless K Wacky hooks.  They are available in 3/0 and 6/0 sizes.   I mostly use the 3/0 size with a 1/16 oz weight molded on to the hook shank.   I am out of the 6/0 or that is what I'd use.
