ghost Posted October 12, 2013 Posted October 12, 2013 Do you turn off your mag brakes on your Daiwa b/c reel when it's not in use, or stored away for the season? I ask cuz I noticed a couple of my Daiwa b/c reels mag brake were on, probably on for a couple to few months. Will the mag brake still slow down the spool? Does the magnet degrade it's effectiveness after time if left on? Quote
JeziHogg Posted October 12, 2013 Posted October 12, 2013 I doubt it - its not like its an electromagnet. So even if you turn the dial to off the magnets will still be trying to attract either a negative or positive pole. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted October 12, 2013 Super User Posted October 12, 2013 No. Otherwise I would never have any overruns on the first few casts of the new year before my thumb memory kicked in. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted October 12, 2013 Super User Posted October 12, 2013 I doubt it has any negative effects but when I store my combos for the winter I back the drag off the whole way and spool tension plus turn all the brakes off. Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted October 12, 2013 Super User Posted October 12, 2013 no you should be fine Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 No worries, you're fine. Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted October 13, 2013 Super User Posted October 13, 2013 Magnets are very interesting, and I have studied them for another hobby that I participate in. Two things that can affect the strength of magnets in fishing reels is heat, and shock. The temps that fishing reels are commonly exposed to is a non factor, and shock, as in impact type drops would have to be fairly significant to have a big impact on fishing reels. One report I read said that magnets when tested may lose only 1-2% of their capacity over a 10 year period in a normal use situation. I don't think you have anything to worry about. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted October 14, 2013 Super User Posted October 14, 2013 No worries, you're fine. X2... Just remember to back off the drags and your good... Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted October 14, 2013 Super User Posted October 14, 2013 X2... Just remember to back off the drags and your good... Some have reported not backing off on the drag for 25 years with no problem. My personal experience has been that not backing off can cause the drag to stick. When this has happened, loosening the drag and pulling on the line has always freed it up for me. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 14, 2013 Super User Posted October 14, 2013 A guy that hasn't backed his drag off for 25 years also hasn't properly cleaned his reel. Take that advice with a grain of salt. Quote
