What Kind Of Wood

I have only made a few lures and they have all been for bass. I am thinking about making one for pike and am wondering what kind of wood I should use? Thanks for any help.

For starting out I would use either basswood or pine. There are plenty of choices, but these will be the easiest to use until you figure out what specific qualities you want (density, buoyancy, etc.)

Thanks for the help. Our land has lots of pine trees so I can get my wood there. Any suggestions on using branches for lures?

my uncle uses pine and cedar I have yet to try making my own..  and thanks snakehead for that forum

Straight branches with few to no twigs coming off. You need a blank considerably larger than the final product, especially if you're going from raw branch to bait. Dowels from a hardware or hobby store might be a more consistent way to start.

Wait a minute - you aren't planning to whack off a limb and start carving are you?  Better let it dry for months before using it because the moisture content will be way too high.  Personally, I like working with kiln dried basswood because it sands beautifully and has negligible grain effects.  But for a lure intended for toothy critters, white cedar might be even better since it will resist water absorption better when the finish gets punctured.
