Super User bigbill Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 I'm in the process of installing braided line on one of my older baitcasting reels. My question is do I install it with the same tention as I install my copolymer? I run the line thru the pages of the phone book so it's not too loose on the spools. If the phone book is thin then I may stack weight on the phone book. I been installing new line like this for over 40+ years. Just don't run the line thru the "P" pages where your local pizza places are listed. Kidding. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 Don't go really heavy on the pressure or it'll cause the line digging in itself before you even get to use the thing and on the first cast it'll explode on you. Especially if you're not used to casting braid. Just a moderate pressure from two fingers. I use a line spooling station so I can set my tension while the spool is hooked up to that and not have to worry about using my fingers. The reel clamps into the seat and you can just crank it on and just make sure it is going on nice and level. It's worth the small investment in my opinion to get a spooling station. BPS and Berkley make them. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 8, 2013 Author Super User Posted October 8, 2013 I'm going to have to get a line station for sure. I'm upgrading everything else anyway. Thanks. Bill Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 My wife bought me the berkley spooling station just so she did not have hold anymore spools on a pencil while I lined up. They really are handy. 1 Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 I have had one of those Berkley spooling stations for eons. Very handy. Bill for spooling braid, just a little to moderate tension and you will be fine. Too much tension and it will dig in itself. Just like Mark said. 1 Quote
wnybassman Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Just do whatever you usually do, after a few long casts it is what it is anyway. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 9, 2013 Super User Posted October 9, 2013 Just do whatever you usually do, after a few long casts it is what it is anyway. I think so too. I just spool up thru my fingers. Have thought about the spooling station, never seem to get around to buy it. Quote
Hogsticker Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 A phone book works perfect! That's how I do it. Just keep the drag in the middle and don't use to many pages so the braid won't dig. I always run the line off my spool down to the backing behind my boat to get it just right. Quote
