The hollow body frog is the one lure I have never had any success with whatsoever. Ive owened a few they have never caught a single fish bass, and I was using them in bodies of water that I catch a ton of bass out of on a wide aray of other lures. So I picked up a SPRO Bronze eye 65 frog in black and yellow. After watching all of Dean Rojos videos on the bronzeye and how he walks it and gets monster bites I was determined to fish it until I caught one. After multiple attempts I still have yet to get a bite on it. Im thinking my problem is that I cannot get the bait to walk. I have many top water walking baits that I have walked for years but for the life of me I cannot get this frog to walk like Rojos. What am I doing wrong? My setup is a 6'6" meduim rod with a Abu Garcia Revo SX and 15lb P-Line Flourocarbon.

Thanks,

I've heard multiple times that either mono or braid are more conducive for helping baits walk. Personally I'd be throwing braid. Also, ive had a few guys tell me that trimming up the legs on the frog can help it walk better.

Hollow bodies typically also need the legs cut down in order to walk.  The long legs inhibit the side to side movement.

Step 1: Get your hands on a 7' MH rod, minimum.

Step 2: Add the reel of your choice to said rod, with the drag LOCKED DOWN.

Step 3: Spool the reel with braided line.

Step 4: Take your Bronzeye frog, fold the legs over the body towards the line tie, and trim flush with it.

Step 5: Throw it, catch fish.

Notes: No matter how good you get, a frog will not glide side to side like a Spook. The design just simply doesn't allow for that kind of movement. In stead you will have the body of the frog snapping back and forth with the trailing legs swishing as well. When you walk the frog, work the bat from the wrist with snaps of the rod tip, maybe 5" at the most. Vary your retrieve. Some of the biggest hits come on a random, slower retrieve. When a fish crushed the frog reel down and HAMMER him.

Cut one leg 1/2"-3/4" shorter than the other. Heard this years ago from a pro. I have no clue why, but it works.

This is very true........ If I were you i would invest in a frog rod..... I was using a 7'9 st.croix swimbait rod.. it was so tiring and couldnt walk it for nothing. i also use the spro frogs. I just bought a powell frog rod and its absolutely amazing, you can also throw jigs and C-rigs on it also. Point being invest in something that will help with the technique you are trying to achieve. I hope this helps bud.

Flouro is absolutely your problem. It is sinking and pulling the nose of the frog down into the water. Also, switch to a stiffer rod and at minimum 50# braid. I would be willing to bet you will see an almost immediate difference in how it works.

Without a doubt the flouro is killing the walking ability of the bait. I fish mine on 50# braid without cutting the legs or modifying the bait at all and it walks like a champ. I'd suggest a longer, stronger rod also, not to make it walk better, just to haul fish out of heavy cover better.

100% truth. Also I'll add that it is critical that you have slack in your line while walking a frog, the slack is the whole key to getting the desired action, second only to needing braided line. Not that it can't be done with mono, it can, the braid just makes it a lot easier. I also think a heavier action rod is called for, I use a frog specific rod, and I feel it's much easier to get the walking action using it than say a 7' MH rod.

I have said this before, and I will say it again. Although walking a frog may have its advantages, its not the end all be all of frog fishing. If frog is on the menu, it doesn't matter what the frog is doing imho.

I agree and disagree with your statement. I agree that "walking" isn't the end all be all frog presentation but I disagree that it doesn't matter how you work it. I've had days where they would only bite if I was walking the bait and others where they wanted the straight ahead twitch, twitch, twitch pause presentation. Over the years though, thinking back on it, I think I've caught more fish with the twitch/pause presentation than walking. Both have their place IMO, but it certainly doesn't mean you can't catch plenty of frog fish just because you can't walk them.

Walking works best to me around wood, just my opinion. I seem to get more bites around grass with the twitch/pause method. To be even more specific I think I get most grass bites when I twitch it fast 3 times, pause, then give it one additional forward twitch.

These are all just my personal opinions and certainly not written in stone. I absolutely love frog fishing and talking frog fishing, great to read how others are catching them. I can always stand to learn something new about fishing with these awesome baits.

I can personally guarantee that without the proper rod, you will miss 90% or more of your frog fish. Braid is almost as important. The no-stretch factor is essential.

I just got my Bronzeye Shads today.  They are awesome.

I have some in transit, they were suppose to be here tomorrow but when I last checked they have been delayed until Monday now, UPS... figures.

I throw my frogs on a MH Fenwick musky rod because once your fish bury's in the grass your gonna want that cork above the reel to haul em out. That along with 65 lb braid. I can throw it a country mile....no kidding. This is crutial when wanting to get into the very back of coves.

had the same problem, get a longer heavier rod, some braid and trim the legs and you'll be haulin in some whoppers in no time
