Anyone do this? I always used to tie on my lures and hooks the night before. And never really experienced any problems. But then i read somewhere its bad because the longer a knot is tied the weaker it gets. So i stopped doing it. But my grandfather does it all the time. From bass fishing with me to fishing for blues and stripers off the coast. And ive never seen it be an issue for him. But i digress. So, anyone out there tie their knots the night before?

In the interest of saving time, I try to have my rigs setup the night before an outing. I've never noticed an issue with knot breakage. If its tied correctly you shouldn't have a problem. Degradation won't happen in 12 hours.

I've had hooks tied on with the same knot for the past 1-2 months without retying.. Never had a single issue with breaking a knot... I wouldn't buy into that one bit.. Can't imagine a knot gets weaker in 12 hours...

I sometimes do it and have never had a problem.  I've also had a bait tied on that didn't get used at all on a trip and kept it tied on for the next trip, without a problem.

If I know the water and know how I'm going to attack the area yes, if not, I just leave what I had on tied from the previous trip and switch if need be on a new lake.

That's funny right there!

When do you retie?

Before you're ready to cast?

I keep a Texas rig & Jig tied on 24/7/365, I check all line, knots, hooks after every trip & then respool, retie, & replace if needed.

Set ups read to go the night before if not a few days earlier.

I have even been known to put MegaStrike on my baits after rigging them for a tournament a few days later.

No problems.

Sometimes I have stuff tied on from a week before.  Before I fish I'll give the knot a few good pulls to see if it breaks or slips.  Never had a problem.

Yea im going to go back to doing that. Its usually only 5-6 hours. Tie them before bed and wake up at 5am. Can imagine a onot would degrade in a few hours. Thanks for the input gents!

Like others, some of my rigs are tied on for days. And yes, sometimes I will tie new stuff the night before. I always (ok, 99.327% of the time) check lines before first cast. If I feel anything on the line that gives me pause, I change it out.

But if all's well on the line, I rarely worry about the terminal knot. I've got 100% confidence in my snell, uni, and Palomar knots.

It seems to me that it is much better to do your knot tying prior to the day you plan on fishing. This way, you can take more time to do it right and ensure that the knots are as perfect as you can make them. I could not envision tying everything up while either heading out on the water to fish, or after stopping to actually start fishing. Seems to me you'd be more prone to mistakes doing it that way.

Only bad experiance I had of tying knots the night before was my cat found the rods and chewed halfway up and i didt know it. Next day set the hook and snap. Never thought I would have to hide my rods before I go fighing

I'm late to chime in but but like everyone else already said you'll be fine, as long as you tie good knots to begin with.

Depends on several factors, type and # test of the line.

Braid doesn't weaken under time and stress, no need to re tie.

Mono or FC over 15 # test can be pre tied weakening 20 to 25 % knot strength (12# is still strong enough).

I always tie hook, jigs, clips on just before launching with FC or mono 12# or less.

Both nylon (mono) and FC cold flow under time, pressure and heat. Cold flow reduces the diameter of the line and deforms the knot weakening it about 20 to 25% within 24 hours. Don't believe it? Test your knots after a day or so!

If its straight braid, I don't care. If its FC, Copoly or mono, I tie the day of. I'm sure I'll be fine as I've never had problems in the past, but I just want to minimize the risk as much as possible. Has tying the same day helped, I dunno. It does make me feel better though.

Absolutely, especially bass fishing for me.  I'm fishing pretty much the same places everday and I know what I'm going to use before I get there.

Not the case when I'm fishing inshore, the forecast does not give me enough information to determine how I'm going to fish and what I'm using.  My set ups will be different depending visually on the surf and whether we have seaweed floating in with it.  I prefer to tie knots tie at the water, with more dampness in the air they cinch down better and may not even wet them down, tying in my garage before I leave I may have to make more than 1 attempt to get a good knot.  I'll have only 1 rod fishing the beach or 2 rods fishing a jettie or sea wall and 3 rods on a boat, so I'm talking very short prep time to rig.

I'm a dumb Cajun but wouldn't it stand to reason that on day 2 it would be 40-50%, on day 3 it would be 60-75%, on day 4 would it be 80-100%, & completely gone by day 5?

I throw mono more than braid or FC & have never had an issue with line breakage from it being tied to long.

I have been fishing off & on since I was a little kid, I just turned 44, and I never even considered tying a lure on a week before I fish, the day before I fish , the day I fish, when I am walking to the creek, before I cast etc. I just grabbed my rod and went fishin and had fun doing it!

FC allegedly loses 20% of it's rated breaking point when initially tying a knot. (I say allegedly because anybody who has tied a fresh knot /w 16-20# fluoro, snagged an immovable object on the first cast and tried to pull it free knows that the line is ridiculously strong and will saw through your hands-I do believe it does lose some of it's rated strength but i personally don't know exactly how much). the knot doesn't weaken 20% each day, just at the initial knot tie. there are other variables to take into account for knot weakening later after the first tie such the cover you brought it through, if you pulled a snag free, etc just leaving a knot sit won't weaken it 20% each day. it only weakens on the initial first knot. I have the utmost confidence in my choice of fluorocarbon lines. I will tie everything I'm using up during the morning period before launch of a tournament. If i'm just fun fishing, I do it the night before.

Well I tied on my hooks and lures last night and caught 5 today in a few hours. Including a new PB of 5lbs 2oz. So Ill just keep doing it! But I will always check them before I make a first cast.

Thanks! I started really focusing on going after bigger fish. Fishing a lot slower, using bigger baits. This one came on a 5 inch Senko on a split shot rig. Go figure. Lol
