Super User WRB Posted October 4, 2013 Super User Posted October 4, 2013 Not a fan of using reel gear ratio for line retrieved per handle turn. The reason being the two are not always equal and is dependant of reel spool diameter and width. The reel mfr's have gone to higher ratios to off set smaller spool diameters. I only use 2 reel line retrieve speeds; 22"-26" and 28"-32". The 22"-24" is used for nearly all my bass lures except big swimbaits that I fish with. A larger and wider spool diameter reel. What is Important to me is how much line is recover when you make a normal 75' to 90' cast! Tom Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted October 6, 2013 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted October 6, 2013 I high speed reels for everything. If I want my bait to move slower, I just turn the handle slower. 2 Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 6, 2013 Super User Posted October 6, 2013 5.0:1 - spinner baits, lipless cranks, buzz bait 5.8:1 - every thing else If I want to speed up I turn the handle 1 more time! Quote
Super User tomustang Posted October 6, 2013 Super User Posted October 6, 2013 If you have those ratios and like them go for it, everyone is different and prefer what they like. I on the other hand like faster reels. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted October 7, 2013 Super User Posted October 7, 2013 I use 7.1 for everything, I don't have a problem reeling faster or slower. I have 1, 5.1 reel left and wish it was faster 1 Quote

Tom Agreed, but most LP bass reels have almost identical diameters, so its not so much of an issue as in round reels and saltwater reels. For bass, I use 6.3 for everything except cranking, I don't see the need for anything faster, but my advise is use whatever works for you. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted October 8, 2013 Super User Posted October 8, 2013 I use a 3.8 round Garcia for big shallow cranks and swimbaits Quote

I agree. Especially for bass fishing I don't burn my lures too often, bass are ambush predators and I feel most of the time they go for the easiest target. I like to work my lures on the slower side and have no problem speeding up or slowing down my retrieve speed, IPT seem to be more of a determining factor than ratio. Being overly confused never excited me. Quote

I have 1, 5.1 reel left and wish it was faster same here on baitcasters and i use one spinning reel a c14 stratic 2500 with a GL2 loomis rod for finesse and small swimbaits jerkbaits. Quote
