I buy licenses in all states where I fish.  It is just the right thing to do and I think just about everyone here probably agrees and does the same.  Not only is it right because it is the law, but as FishinDaddy stated, we should support the resources we use.  Heck, I'll support resources I don't use.

I had a guide one time up who was moonlighting from his job as a warden.......he told me a bunch about how stretched he and the other COs were, not only enforcing game laws but doing all they do out of sight to assess and protect the fisheries up here. $ is tight these days in our state budget and Fishing and Wildlife are the first "non-essential" areas to take the hit. They tried to compensate last year by getting the public to help assess wild brookie populations in remote lakes they didn't have time or money to do themselves. Makes me sad. I got a lifetime license but still felt guilty cause I caught a break . Long story short: we all take care of the fisheries.....or not.

It's something I wouldn't think twice about. If I'm fishing I'm licensed;like others have said in this thread, it"s not only the right thing to do It's a peace of mind thing.

What whitwolf said.

Just do it, it'll save you potential headaches and hundred $$ +/- possibility in fines if caught.

They CAN take your equipment, but more often than not, you get ticketed. I have been witness to it more than once.

Correct. They can... but I wouldn't give them the choice.

First off I would buy a license no matter where I was fishing.  Secondly, If I was traveling on business I don't think my employer would like it if I snuck out to go fishing.

This is where the topic truly becomes a grey area  ;)

Who said anything about sneaking out? That's a whole other subject.

I currently have licenses for 4 different states in my wallet (KS, MO, AR, and OK). On top of that I have several permits for different counties, or individual lakes, and 2 different year pass stickers for ramps on the windshield of my truck. If I'm going fishing I'm going to do my best to make sure I have everything I'm supposed to have before I hit the water. Not only do I feel like it's morally the right thing to do, but if I get caught without one it could have serious repercussions at work.

This thread has taken some other directions and that's ok, but it is not about planning a fishing outing, poaching or even keeping legal fish caught without a license.  It's about taking a little bit of time out to wet a line and I'm assuming C&R when totally different activities are the main focus.  If I were on business trip I probably would not even have a rod with me.

Always buy a license because you are supporting and funding care of the fisheries you are getting to use.

I buy a liscence anytime I travel and fish. Its not worth the fine or any other penalities. And on my home lake I get stopped all the time and one of the first things they ask for is to see you liscence. I have a budy who was bank fishing and did not have a one and they finned him and took his gear.

i say buy the license, it will just help you avoid having a major headache if you get caught without a license. now i have read that Virginia and NC have a reciprocal license agreement for Lake Gaston. But i havent seen if its for boaters or if it applies to shore fishing too. a couple times i have went shore fishing for cats there in NC without a NC License but did have a valid VA License. Im not sure it was applicable to shore fishing though, i havent read its not. But this last time i went to NC back over Labor Day weekend, i went and got an NC License just to be sure. Seen two game wardens ride by several times on a boat. Eventually they went into a cove around the corner from where me and bro in law were fishing, docked their boat, and snuck up on us by land. It was dark out, and we never heard nor saw them coming until they were 15 feet away and clicked on a flashlight and announced themselves. was a simple license check, all was good and they were on their way. the bad part about all of it was, it was the perfect chance for me to ask for clarification about the reciprocal agreement and if my virginia fishing license was good to use for bankfishing from shore in NC at Lake Gaston, and i totally forgot...

Evidently it's a misdemeanor in NC as well.  We went fishing this past weekend for my bachelor party on Lake Fontana and one idiot in the group didn't have his license.  We got stopped by the game warden and he got a ticket for $215 and the officers said it was a misdemeanor and would be on his record.  I am fortunate enough to have a lifetime license in NC, but even in other states I never go fishing without a license, never worth it.

I always purchase a license, I wish they would come to the lake I fish and check licenses There are several that fish without one.  I remember one time going on the first day of trout fishing.  I was fishing a small creek that had a deep hole where I had caught trout before.  Two guys came and asked if I minded them fishing along with me, I didn't object and we fished for a little while before the game warden pulled up and got out of his car. He came down to where we were and asked us to show licenses, One of the guys threw down his Rod and cut out running.  Game warden a younger guy cut out right behind him yelling for him to stop. In the mean time the other guy laid his rod down and walked of into the woods.  About a hundred yards down the creek the guy running stopped and pulled out his license and showed the game warden, turns out his buddy who had walked away didn't have a license.  The game warden didn't even bother to check mine he just got in his car and left.

You can buy them on line. Could not be any easier.

It starts and ends with Character.

I always have a license.  Peace of mind makes any fishing experience well worth the small cost of a license.

So the guy I'm assuming got arrested for fleeing and eluding and obstruction so his buddy wouldn't get a ticket??
