I prefer throwing the 3.8 Swing Impact Fat.  Usually I throw it on a football head jig for more "wobble" and protection from snagging rocks on the bottom when dragging super slow.  I also throw it with a 1/4 oz bullet unpegged in front of a wide gap hook for a weedless presentation. 

 

I see some people throw it using a spinning rod (with 1/4oz round jighead), but I usually use a baitcasting setup MHF rods 6'6" or 7'0". 

 

What do use as a rod and reel set up?  Should I be using a different rod?

I use a Phenix Recon 715 (a bit lighter than "HEAVY") with a Zillion and 16lb Sniper.  I throw the 3.8 and 4.8 on Screw-lock weighted hooks (1/8-5/8 oz).

I like my Saint Croix LTB Teaser (LTBC70MF) for this type of stuff.  Loads easily, yet has plenty of backbone.

I like throwing the 3.8 on a darter head.  I usually use a Rainshadow RX8 822.5 built as a casting rod, paired with a Daiwa Sol and 8lb  fluorocarbon.  It's sweet for casting small reaction baits.  I use it for Pointer 78's and RC 0.5 sized crankbaits, among other things.

Thanks for the replies. Had a good fish come off this weekend because I don't think it loaded up well. I think my line of choice in the future is 12 -16 lb FLuoro on a 70 MF. Now to find a good rod for 150 or less for this.

Sounds like a perfect rod. I'm gonna search the forums for this exact rod. I love my other saint croix rods

Sounds like I'm in the minority here but I throw them mostly on a Med Fast spinning rod. The thing I like about them is how little movement is needed to make the tail swim. A spinning rig launches them a mile and I retrieve them just across the bottom.

CT? You in CT BASS? I throw the same stuff. I throw em with worm weights on a 6' M/F spinning and with football heads on a 6'6 M/F baitcaster. A Lot of guys throw them on MH at candlewood. I have yet to try em with a stiffer rod....

Oh btw I use the gamagatsu G lock hooks 4/0 size. No reason specificly just personal preference.

Yes.  I'm a member - co-angler.  Most do use the MHF rods at Candlewood but my buddy throws on MF spinning rod - similar to DVT.  Just wanted to know what others use.  When you say "worm weights" do you mean bullet sinker in front of hook or nail weights inserted in the bait (or something else)?  Thanks.

Worm weight as in bullet weight in line in front of hook. Yea I tanked in the 2 day too. I'm also a Co angler.

With only 4-5 combos allowed on deck I need versatility so I use spinning gear with 7' Med/Fast Rod using 10#nano tied to a 10#FC leader,/Seagar InvizX, tied to a Gamakatsu Weighted Superline Spring Lock Hook 4/0.  Fished with it for a few hours and this rig netted me three bass all under 15" and two chain pickerel, didn't miss a single fish,  I even hooked a bass under the jaw, from a short strike.  What an amazing bait, I cant wait to try there tubes out..

I like a longer rod to get further casts. A NRX 893c works great for me. I also, throw this rig on a Cumulus 7'1'' MHXF and it worked fine. I don't think this technique is really too demanding. I would also think the OP's setup is just fine for the application as well. I just like being able to get the added distance of a longer rod.

My 4.5"-5" swimsuit rig is a Loomis 6'9" or 6'6" 3 power rod with 12lb copolymer on a Gamakatsu 5/0 weighted superline hook.
