Horseshoe crazy Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 I bought a 597 hd di unit last year and I need replace the analog unit on the bow. Thinking about the same unit for the front. But was looking at a 700 series si unit. So my question is is the si worth the extra money and if I bought it would it serve me better on the bow or console. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted October 4, 2013 Super User Posted October 4, 2013 It's worth every penny. Mine is on the console. As far as where you put it, IMO your fishing style should dictate that. I'm fishing shallow docks and shorelines most of the time and don't see a benefit. If I fished deep or open water more, I'd definitely have one on the bow. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted October 5, 2013 Super User Posted October 5, 2013 I use Side Imaging a lot more at the bow than I do at the console. Shallow or deep, you can see what is away from under the boat. How shallow???-- as long as the transducer is not buried in the bottom. Quote
greyleg33 Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 I had mine on the bow for a short time. The constant turns interfered with the return. Quote

If you have Humminbird Side Imaging, set up properly, turning the motor will not be an issue. You would only have a thin line on the display when turning the motor since the screen won't be scrolling fast enough to record the motor turning. You can intentionally set it to disply when turning to keep up with moving fish somewhat like the 360 transducer does. I do both depending on the situation. Another thing while fishing only current data is revelant so recorded history is of no use when you need to know where the fish are in real time. That makes only the first row of screen pixels revelant. That applies to Imaging and 2D sonar. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 9, 2013 Super User Posted October 9, 2013 I prefer a bigger display at the bow. 1 Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted October 9, 2013 Super User Posted October 9, 2013 I prefer a bigger display at the bow. I do to, J. especially if more than a single view is displayed Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 9, 2013 Super User Posted October 9, 2013 Yes, that's the main reason. From the helm, I'm either looking at the map or the scan - rarely both. Up front, I'm often zoomed in on the map, all the while in split screen mode with the scan. That, and I spend more time at the bow. Quote
Nice_Bass Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 I am very much interested at how to have a lowrance set up at the bow proper as well- I assumed the turning would screw it all up, and in the end not be what I was looking for. I prefer 2d up front, only because I don't have SI there/don't know the logistics of it... Quote
