Using Braided Line??

Ok I'm thinking that braided line is the line of the future. I guess it's gaining more popularity too. Since braid is expensive do you use a filler line in your reel? Do you use a leader for your crankbaits, inline spinners, spinnerbaits and jigs. For topwater lures I'm thinking no leader is needed.

Does braid wear out your reels and rods faster. How long does braided line last on your reel? Is there anymore I should know about braided line before I try it again?

I don't use filler line, braid lasts a longgggg time. I still have several reels with the same braid from last summer.

 

  Remember though, braid is not the end all be all. It's not the "perfect" answer to every line situation out there. Yes, it has many uses, and it's great for those uses, but it's not necessary or even good to use for all techniques and baits. Remember braid floats, that's a positive for certain techniques, but not all. Braid doesn't stretch, again that's a huge plus sometimes, and other times not so much.

 Braid isnt expensive $10-$15 for a spool that can fill 2-3 reels and last for years and years. I have the first spool of Power Pro I bought over 10 years ago. Its on a spinning reel my son uses now and is still strong.

On my spinning reels with larger capacity 30 size I use filler. On my smaller spinningreels 20 & 1000 size no filler. On my 50 size baitcasters no filler at first but will gradually use filler as needed through use..

 

Leader I dont use and my waters are 15 foot visibility but nothing to worry about as far as abrasion. Mostly weeds I fish through. I think pretty much falls under personal preference confidence thing.

 

Ive not had any wear issues on any rods reels no matter the cost.

Braid isn't the future, it's the present and who knows what's coming down the line in years to come.

 

I use braid and spinning nearly 100% of time for my fresh and saltwater use.  I always use leaders and if for no other reason getting braid tangled in treble hooks can be a nightmare, a mono leader untangles much easier.  Additionaly even a short leader like I use does supply a bit of shock, I find that helpful.  By filler I'm assuming you mean backing, I personally never use backing.  I will add braid using an alberto both in freshwater and inshore fishing, but offshore ocean only gets a total respool.  My lines don't last long, the natural act of spinning by wrapping around the spool will put some twist on, further amplified by the kind of lure being used, that does create wind knots for me when I'm not careful.  Inshore my lines take more of a beating, I'm always adding or respooling, but I'm not negative on it, it's still my line of choice.  The only sizes I use are 10-15 and 20# for all of my fishing.

I BEEN USING BRAID FOR 20 YEARS.GET SUFIX 832 AND BE DONE WITH IT.NO FILLER BUT TAPE LINE TO SPOOL.NO LEADERS.USE 20 LB SPINNING AND 50 BAITCAST.

I like 65lb PP for jigs, and heavier spinnerbaits.

I use a 6ft long 20lb fluoro leader.

If I'm fishing a frog it's straight braid.

I use braid on many applications, but I never use it with topwater lures.  I find that it always get tangled up in the treble hooks on topwater lures, i assume because it floats, but not certain.  i also like the stretch of mono on topwater, this helps because a lot of times i spaz out and jerk at the first site of the topwater crash.  With braid i seem to jerk it right out of their mouth, but with mono i guess there's enough stretch that it helps just a touch with hook sets.  May only be my personal preference though....

aside from that i like braid for tons of other applications....  powerpro is great, never tried Suffix, but have heard it's better?

I don't use filler, I use 12' of big game to attach to the spool then fill full with 30 to 50Lbs test Sufix 832 on baitcast reels, 8 to 20 lbs test on spinning, in a couple years I always turn it around on the spool and use a little more mono to make up for the line I have trimmed from time to time to make a full spool again, do this before you turn the line around and you will have a perfectly spooled reel again with brand new unused line, 4 BUCK'S a year,,,,,,,,, 4 years for about $16.00, for top shelf line!!!! I always Use a leader 4' to 12" mono or fluoro.  best of all worlds,,,,,,

I used to use fireline or spiderwire and suffix but recently tried nanofil and will never go back.  SO MUCH NICER!  It's smoother, casts much farther, spools better and is thinner.  I am in love.  I just double palomar it every time and it's never made me regret using it, ever.  I also have a 13 *** Black which has recoil guides- which were super loud with fireline (fused braid) but nice and quiet with nanofil too.  

 

I just wish they made a smoke color.  Oh well...  A man can hope, can't he?

1) I use enough backing such that there's room for 50-60 yards of braid

2) I never use a leader for anything

3) There is no evidence that I can see of extra wear on my rods and reels and I use relatively inexpensive gear

4) It lasts a long time, but I can't quantify that

5) Braid is amazingly abrasion resistant to wood and vegetation

6) It can be a total pain in the neck because it can find its way anywhere, such as split rings, line ties, around hooks, behind reels, etc., especially when doing a hookset and just hauling water. But the pluses outweigh the minuses for me

i love braided line.. i use 30lb braid on my spinning rods and 50lb braid on my baitcasters. i keep only one baitcaster with 14lb mono for cranks, lipless cranks and the odd time a spinnerbait or we

Here is , generally, how I do it. Backing line on every reel ( spinning and casting)..............I use the cheapo Omni-flex mono in 10lb test, after all it's just filler, no need to go crazy here. I put enough on so roughly 1/2 (75 yards) of a 150 yard spool of power pro will fill the reel up. And I use fluorocarbon leaders on just about everything except my frog rod, punching thick matted grass, topwaters, or really dirty water. On average I get two.................YES TWO seasons of use out of that 75 yards of braid. Often the only time I have to re-spool is when I have eventually used up enough of it trough re-tying/etc... that on an average cast I am down to the backing. I know of no other more cost effective line system. I pay about $13 bucks for a 150 yard spool of braid, that lasts two years, $15 for a 250 yard spool of fluorocarbon leader material, that gets used 6' at a time ( I retie my leaders after the get down to less than 2') so that lasts for at least 2 years , and $4 for a spool of backing line that lasts..........well I rarely change the backing, unless it's really nasty looking, or I am sending the reel out for service.
