Jucas97 Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Hey folks. Can anyone give me some tips on a nice, quality reel at a decent price? Say no more expensive than 150$. I'm 16, so that's about a whole paycheck for me... Lol, I prefer a baitcaster, and I use weightless soft plastics of any kind, top water poppers and walkers, and small size squarebill crank baits. The rod I'm putting it on is a 6'6 KVD tour rod fast action tip. I got this rod on sale, because I could never have afforded a rod this expensive. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted October 4, 2013 Super User Posted October 4, 2013 Lews BB1, I believe to be the best reel for a buck and a half. You should peruse the flea market on here. Some goood stuff for way less than retail. 1 Quote
WarEagleBassin Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Lew's speed spool...only $99...no need to spend any more...great reel 1 Quote
WhiteMike1018 Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Bass pro shops has a great deal going on right now with their Johnny Morris reels, I own a pro qualifier and love it.. this one is a step up from the PQ just ordered the johnny morris reel on sale...you cant beat the quality for the price http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Johnny-Morris-CarbonLite-Baitcast-Reels/product/1110020501438/ Quote
RyneB Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 BPS Pro Qualifier can be had for around $60 when the spring sale is going on. I don't own one, but a buddy does and he loves it. Daiwa Tatula for $149.99. I have not used this reel, but from all the feedbacks, its a great reel. I will be getting the Type R when it is released. Abu Garcia Revo S for $129.99. I own 7 S's. Its a great reel for the price. You can get a SX for $159.99, but the S is more user friendly and more forgiving. Daiwa Lexa 100 for $129.99. I feel its a better overall reel than a Revo S, the only reason I prefer the S over the Lexa is my hand placement on the Lexa seems to always interfere with the brake setting when im working a bait. So I switched it to one of my moving bait rods and have had no problems since. I cant comment on a Lews because I have never used one. From what I hear, it is a good reel. 1 Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted October 4, 2013 Super User Posted October 4, 2013 Look for a used Curado 50e they are the easiest reel for a beginner to use 1 Quote
dave Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Once again I will say Academy H2O Mettle. $50, maybe even $30. You won't be disappointed and will save a ton of money. Put the difference toward a nice rod. 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 4, 2013 Super User Posted October 4, 2013 I would go for a Quantum Code Red baitcaster they list for $99 and I know we're you can get a decent baitcaster rod $30 plus the reel for $54 for $84 that's hard to beat. Enough left over for new line, New lures and maybe lunch on the dollar menu. 1 Quote
Super User David P Posted October 4, 2013 Super User Posted October 4, 2013 Revo STX from Ebay. Retail is $200 but can frequently get them for about $130 on ebay. Smooth, high speed reel, with a great drag. 1 Quote

5fishlimit Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 I have the lew's speed spool and the revo s and would suggest a speed spool. Both are good, but the lew's feels smoother and you can use the leftover money for some good fishing line. 1 Quote
Jucas97 Posted October 4, 2013 Author Posted October 4, 2013 Hey yall! Wow I'm bombarded with all these reels... I'm really liking the sound of the lews, and "big bill" my current reel is the code and man I have gotten more use than what I paid for... What a great reel. I'm looking for a new one now cause I'm afraid the code is nearing the end of her days. And yes sir, I'm a dollar menu expert! everyone else I will look into the reels and see what I like. Thanks for the help! 1 Quote
Jucas97 Posted October 4, 2013 Author Posted October 4, 2013 P.S. Everyone mentioning having leftover money to buy good line reminded me, currently on at tackle warehouse sunline is buy one get one free! I ordered some monofilament because I enjoy throwing top water baits alot:) Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted October 4, 2013 Super User Posted October 4, 2013 Look for a used Curado 50e they are the easiest reel for a beginner to use Great reel, great advice! Just saw this in our Flea Market: http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/125649-like-new-chronarch-50e/ Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted October 4, 2013 Super User Posted October 4, 2013 Agree with everyone else, Lews, or Curado 50e, if you can find one that isn't beat to pieces. Got them both, and both are great reels. Hootie Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted October 4, 2013 Super User Posted October 4, 2013 The Lews Speed spool, the $99 dollar model, not the laser speed spool. If you read the description you will see the speed spool has an aluminum frame, I believe that this is the best casting reel in the $100 dollar range made. I fish with a guy who love the Lews reels and has a couple of Lews Tournament Pros and he got his son the speed spool and after using it to get it dialed in we got off the water and he headed straight for Cabelas to take back his new TP and get 2 more speed spools. The extra weight balanced out his rod better plus he said there was no difference in performance once he dialed it in, he really liked it that much so you may want check that out. Remember, the speed spool has an aluminum frame, the laser speed spool has a graphite frame, stay away from graphite framed reels. Quote
JaxBasser Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 You can get brand new Speed Spools for $75-80 on Ebay from good reliable sellers. Can't beat that for the price. Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 4, 2013 Super User Posted October 4, 2013 I would look at the new Daiwa Tatula. Read the thread on this forum and TT video. I remember my first new bait casting reel and still have it after 55 years, good memories. Tom Quote
VolFan Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Go to the Flea Market and offer JTJ $150 for his slightly used Chronarch 50E. You're not going to beat that. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted October 4, 2013 Super User Posted October 4, 2013 I would look at the new Daiwa Tatula. Tom I agree with Tom. And I also agree with comments on the 50e. I absolutely love Daiwa's brake system(s) - and I own a Chronarch 50e as well... My Lexa is easier to dial in for zero backlashes than the 50e, but the Shimano is much smoother (to be expected from a much more expensive reel). Should mention that the Lexa brake system is not as good as the Tatula. Don't own Lews, but they're obviously getting a lot of rave reviews, and as loyal a following as Shimano. Quote
motodmast Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 You can get brand new Speed Spools for $75-80 on Ebay from good reliable sellers. Can't beat that for the price. this is what i do, not a problem yet Quote
MO_LMB Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Go for the NEW DAIWA TATULA - Right at $150, does a great job throwing low weights, built to last. Lots of bang for your buck. You can check out the review at Tackle Tour if you don't believe me. Hey yall! Wow I'm bombarded with all these reels... Arv Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 If you check around you should be able to fine a lews tp for around 150. That's the best bang for your buck if you ask me. Quote
