JellyMan Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Well today was my first time. I look for my weightless plastics setup and what do you know, it's gone. Went back to look for it and no go. Must have sunk. Not even sure where it fell of the boat at. So disappointed. Gen 3 Revo STX on a Mojo Bass rod. Real sweet. And... I got no bites; as usual up here in N.Florida. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted October 3, 2013 Super User Posted October 3, 2013 Did the same thing with a Mojo 6'8" MXF with a Stradic FJ......except mine was in my kayak and on my back stroke i thought i heard it go but didn't pay attention to it till i was loading up and noticed it was gone. Still makes me mad...... Quote
Missourifishin Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Not yet, knock on wood. I would be sick. Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Oh yeeeaaaaaahhhhh... Lost my orra s with some crappy rod and a quantum antix with like a $50 buck rod... But still between my friends and I we lost like $600 worth of stuff including our cell phones... Memories Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted October 3, 2013 Super User Posted October 3, 2013 Short answer to the question is yes. I take some solace in the notion that none of us ever really own any fishing tackle, we just have temporary custody of it. Quote
S_Miketa6 Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 I haven't lost one yet and hope I never do!!! Quote
Super User tomustang Posted October 3, 2013 Super User Posted October 3, 2013 Don't let it get you down too far, if anything it'll help you be more aware to secure your gear better next time out Quote
Super User slonezp Posted October 3, 2013 Super User Posted October 3, 2013 Twice. Recovered both times. One I was able to catch with a weighted crankbait in 7fow and the other I went swimming for in 15fow 3 Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted October 3, 2013 Super User Posted October 3, 2013 Two in lakes and one in a river-all spinning combos. All three better than average quality (for my collection). One was lost while landing and unhooking a nice hybrid striper-small tin boat, rough deep water. One was lost when my canoe overturned while fishing in a river that was too high and too fast moving to safely fish. The most recent was lost when I decided to let it go after falling from my boat (not wearing a life preserver) while fishing alone in choppy, cold water and realizing I could not catch the boat or reach shore hanging on to it. There may be a pattern here... None were recovered. Quote
JellyMan Posted October 3, 2013 Author Posted October 3, 2013 Twice. Recovered both times. One I was able to catch with a weighted crankbait in 7fow and the other I went swimming for in 15fow I would have went in for it if I knew where it was. Bogus. I was hoping it stayed afloat but I didnt see anything. The split corks on the Mojo Bass rods just didnt float it enough. I tested the flotation on another one of my setups and they stay afloat for maybe 30 seconds then they slowly sink into the depths. Quote
bmlum415 Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 While I haven't, I know two people who have dropped a phenix m1 with a chronarch and a recon with a core in the water and they got lucky that phenix rods float so they were able to retrieve them easily Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted October 3, 2013 Super User Posted October 3, 2013 No, but a couple of months ago, I reeled in a broken rod, with spinning reel attached. Could tell it hadn't been there long. Cleaned and lubed the reel when I got home. It works great. My guess is a hot temper put this one in the lake. Probably frustration over a broken rod. Super User Catt Posted October 3, 2013 Super User Posted October 3, 2013 One rod/reel & one reel Quote
awefvawervwae Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 I kayak fish a buch and have lost a couple over the time and so has some friends and family. Lost a setup last sumer in the surf in about 3" of water looked for 20 minutes and couldnt find it. Was more worried about someone stepping on the hooks than I was recovering the rod and real. Last month my father-in-law has an ultralight go over while floating the James River. Snagged the bottom and instead of opening the bail he just sat it down on the kayak and it sling shotted out intot he river. Was able to see it on the bottom and jumped in and was able to retrieve it. If in the kayak I try to clip the rods that are not in use in with a a carabiner and short section of rope. Thankfully never lost anything in the bass boat yet. 1 Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted October 3, 2013 Super User Posted October 3, 2013 I was fishing with my girlfriend and she was using one of my combos, rod cost $150 and the reel was $80. She was fishing and texting and somehow left the pole by the water along with te tackle bag. She sees the bag when we r in the car and she hops out to get it but didn't see the rod. We went to the mall and did some shopping for few hours and then got something to eat. Then we drive to another fishing spot that's on the other side of town. We get there I take my pile out and she realizes she left the pole!! This is 6hrs later and we left it at a pond in an apartment complex, Wells Lake. I'm bugging out how my set up was gone we drive back and it's sitting right where she left it fortunately So my story happened to turn out good sorry to hear the ones that ended badly. Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted October 3, 2013 Super User Posted October 3, 2013 Twice. Recovered both times. One I was able to catch with a weighted crankbait in 7fow and the other I went swimming for in 15fow I was going to ask if any guys on boats retrieved their rods with a lure or hook or a quick dip in the water Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted October 3, 2013 Super User Posted October 3, 2013 I lost a high end spinning combo St Croix/Diawa in 20-25 fow in erie two years ago. Quickly put in a way point on the gps & started dragging deep cranks thru the area. South FLA snagged the line and we were able to get it back after unsnagging the combo then unsnagging the lure which caused the whole mess. That was one of those low/high moments that life throws at you. Quote
Nice_Bass Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 This year- casting a jigging spoon and casted the entire outfit 10ft out in the lake-offshore hump (pistol grip rod...so not sure how I managed to do it). Immediately picked up another combo rigged with a jigging spoon and snagged it 10 seconds later, but already sunk. Person in the back of the boat did not notice a thing and I figured I would keep it that way... Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted October 3, 2013 Super User Posted October 3, 2013 lost 2 baitcasters same day..... one was low end bass pro combo, but the other was a brand new Orra SX and mid range rod. long long story, but it involved the kayak, trolling motor, deep cycle battery going overboard, dog, tackle bag floating off.... all previous events mentioned were sparked from me trying to cast and snagging one of the rods in the rod holder behind me (that is one of the rods i lost), followed by the closest encounter i've had yet to drowning.... rods have since been replaced - upgraded is more like it - and i have since retired the thought of the trolling motor and battery on the kayak..... let me say that if there were any witnesses that day on lake oconee they probably got the best show they've ever seen on the water! Quote
tholmes Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 I've lost a couple of combos (that I wasn't able to recover) over the years, but I've also fished out a couple of combos that other people lost. So in the end, it's a wash. Tom Quote
motodmast Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 my good friend lost his best rod combo ( GLX and shimano reel) in the potholes reservior, basically the deepest part of the lake while we were making a run to a different spot, that was a big loss, hes still ticked on that one, idk how it fell out we got to our spot and it was gone Quote
Super User CWB Posted October 4, 2013 Super User Posted October 4, 2013 Twice. First time I landed a nice musky while bass fishing. After a few pix and releasing the fish I noticed one of my rigs was missing. Probably from the Chinese firedrill trying to land the fish. Trolled around awhile but too weedy. Couldn't find it. Earlier this year I leaned over to lip a bass and heard a splash on the the side of the bow. Turned and saw the tip of one of my favorite rigs sink out of site. Luckily there was a marker right in front of me and I tossed it over. Quickly unhooked the fish, kicked off the clogs and over the side I went. Was in about 5-6 feet of water. Poked around with my feet for about 15 minutes but I found it and grabbed it with my toes and got it back. From the on any rods not in use are strapped down. Quote
Pavo Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 I actully have two separate occasions. I was about 12 years old fishing with my brother and my grandpa near the local dam, (shasta d**n Nor Cal) i put my cast out for about a good 2 minutes, and we noticed a bald eagle up in the sky we were checking it out and then i felt a snag and i hoooked my fish and i was fighting it and fighting it, then the eagle just swoops down and snaggs my fish and along goes my rod with it. yah...my grandpa was ticked and just blown away long with me and my little brother because he just bought that new rod and real for me haha. Then another time my brother and i were at a little dock at lake shasta and we had set our rods down to go grab some food and i was about 14 and we were just using night crawlers and i guess mine was left in the water..came back it was gone. i've never left a rod un attended near the water again. lol espically not my g.loomis. Super User Sam Posted October 4, 2013 Super User Posted October 4, 2013 Lucky for me the answer is no. I have lost some plastics, a cap and one of my maps blew out on the Chickahominy River. I went back and picked it up, dried it out, and still have it. I transferred all of the data to a new map. I am very cautious about my rods and reels while in a boat. So far, so good. Quote
Dave P Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 No, but we caught one last weekend on a crankbait. UL spinning outfit. Quote
