Jcolletit04 Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 I was Fishing last night using a top water when I got a massive hit and reeled this guy in. My scale wasn't working but i did measure it at almost 25 inches. I have caught a 7.5lbs that was 20 inches and this definitely felt heavier. I know the pics are bad I was using my cell phone in one hand and holding it in the other ha. But just curious on what some people think this would weigh thanks! Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Did you measure the girth of the fish? Without that it's difficult to estimate the weight. If you want an honest opinion from the photos the fish looks like 6lbs. at the most, and really looks more like 5lbs. to me. To be fair though, there's not much for size comparison other than your hand (and I have no idea how large your hands are.) So in other words, I can't really make an accurate guess. Nice fish, regardless of the weight. Just noticed that this is your first post. Welcome to the site. You should start a thread in the introductions section. Quote
rangerboy Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 great catch, 5-6lbs imo. during spawn maybe 8. great job, always makes you feel good to catch a nice one Quote
Super User David P Posted October 2, 2013 Super User Posted October 2, 2013 That fish has a large mouth, but looks skinny as a rail. Given the length, even with it being so skinny, I'd still say 7. Regardless, fun to catch big fish on top water! 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 2, 2013 Global Moderator Posted October 2, 2013 7-7.5. I had a 24.5" fish in February that went 7.51 and it looked a little thicker than that one. Very nice fish regardless of the weight though. Quote
Khong Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Judging from the size of that mouth, it's over 8lb. You can fit your fist through it. Now as far as how heavier than 8lb, I say not much because it's belly isn't full. It's got a little lump, but it doesn't look thick. If it was thick, i'd give it a 10lb max. Quote
shimmy Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 the mouth. My goodness. That just gets me excited. 1 Quote
Big Jon Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 I have no idea, just wanted to say, nice fish. 1 Quote
DynoMyte Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Nice fish, no idea what it could weight, it's bigger than any bass I ever caught. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted October 2, 2013 Super User Posted October 2, 2013 Nice pig!! In the first pic on the bottom right, it looks like a scale was right next to you. Batteries ran out? 1 Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted October 2, 2013 Super User Posted October 2, 2013 imo that one will run you around 7-8 easy... nice catch man Quote
MO_LMB Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Im not sure of the weight, but these people saying 5.5 or 6 are crazy, definitely bigger than that. 2 Quote
Jcolletit04 Posted October 2, 2013 Author Posted October 2, 2013 Thanks Everyone! Batteries were fine on the scale it just wouldn't read right, Saying it was in the Negative and **** ha. My guess was 8lbs I've caught multiple 7 pounders and this Felt heavier but we'll never know. On another note What's a good Electronic scale ya'll have had luck with? Quote

Khong Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 this fish weighed a little under 6.5 but check out the mouth! Yeah, but you forgot that his fish is 25 inches in length. Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Yeah, but you forgot that his fish is 25 inches in length. Your right, my point is fish come in all shapes and sizes, just like humans... The weight of his fish is unknown simply because it was not weighed, I wasn't trying to take away from his fish at all. I mean just recently I caught a 21" LMB go 3.99 and I have had 18" LMB go a little over 4... 1 Quote

According to this, a 25" bass would be nearly 10lbs. I have never caught anything that big so I can only look at the lower end around 3-4lbs. Which, compared to what I have caught, seems to be accurate within 1/4 lbs. It would seem to me though, the longer they are, the more the girth could throw the scale one way or the other. Quote

Without a girth measurement it's nearly impossible to even guess the weight of the fish, let alone estimate it. Even then, it's only a ballpark figure. The only reliable way to know the weight of a fish is with an accurate scale. The length to weight conversion scale is not accurate whatsoever. Like NEjitterbugger mentioned some short fish are thick and heavy, and some long fish are skinny and light. The fish weight calculator here on BR is about the closest you can get to an estimated weight without a scale (unless you are one of the very few gifted with this natural talent, but even then the scale has the final word.) One thing that everyone can agree on is that it is a nice fish with a giant mouth. Quote

Your guess is as good as mine when we are guessing. Each of us can only guess upon our experience on what is given to us. If your guess tell you that it's less then 6.5lb then it's your guess. Mine gut's is telling me that it's at least 8lb and not much more. You need to learn to respect other people choice and guess on this forum and stop trying to convince that you are right! Quote

I'm agreeing with you! All I'm saying is that all fish come in different shapes and sizes, which is true and the weight is unknown unless it is weighed... It could very well be an 8 pound fish... Tell me where in my post I disrespected someone, I can't seem to find where that is... I think what I said in my post is 100% correct, considering I agreed with you, then just stating something not even relating to this fish... YOU need to learn to respect people, especially because you misinterpreted what I said. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted October 5, 2013 Super User Posted October 5, 2013 LOL, I have yet to see the OP return to this thread since posting. Yes, the bass was big and beautiful, who knows how heavy it was, I still want to know what was wrong with the scale that was right next to him the whole time!! LOL. 1 Quote
