doublest Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Thinking of springing for a new spinning reel. Trying to decide between the supreme xt, the patriarch, or the Ci4. Is there any distinct advantage of buying the Shimano rather than one of the Pfluegers? It looks like the Supreme xt might be a good choice for the money. Opinions? Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted October 1, 2013 Super User Posted October 1, 2013 I have the patriarch and I LOVE IT! I'd like to get another but I'm thinking about saving a few bucks and getting the XT Quote
TrippyJai Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 The Supreme XT, even the Patriarch at $200 is the best bang for your buck. In fact, you could find them much cheaper as well. Quote
TiNuts Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 I saw last years Ci4s on clearance for $150 at my bass pro. Pretty tough to beat that with a pflueger. Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 (edited) I bought the Supreme XT and Ci4 at the same time to compare how they felt in my hand and return one. I kept the Supreme. It feels like a much more substantial reel, is smoother and it also feels perfect in my hands (I have big hands so I like the thick bail and reel handle; I believe it was Clayton who described the Ci4 handle as a #2 pencil and I agree lol). You could hear and feel the bearings on the Ci4. The Supreme is smooth as silk. TW will price match some sites so I got it for $125 b/c Cabelas had it. I see it here for $119 but don't know if TW will honor that site (They may require them to have a physical location?). http://www.fishusa.com/product/Pflueger-Supreme-XT-Spinning-Reels?source=googleps&gclid=CL7x87igvbkCFUkS7AodZAwAQg I just ordered a MGX for $99 to compare to the XT. looks like it's only .03 oz heavier which is def a non-issue I see they do have a location..in PA no less Edited October 1, 2013 by ClackerBuzz Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 1, 2013 Global Moderator Posted October 1, 2013 I've had 2 Supreme XT's in the 35 size I used for shakyheads. I loved how light and smooth they were but both of them failed on me in less than a year. Both cases were almost the exact same, I'd get a bite, set the hook and hear a terrible grinding noise while the reel slipped badly and would continue to make a terrible grinding sound and continued to slip when I tried to fight the fish in. They were unusable after that. Last one I returned and got a C14 instead and like it very well after a solid year of use. I also have 2 Supreme MGX and like them as well. They don't feel quite as nice as the XT but they are solid and have handled lots of fish for me. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 1, 2013 Super User Posted October 1, 2013 Shimano warranty is hard to beat. Is Shimano's warranty longer than that of a Pflueger? Pure Fishing is about as good as gets with warranty and repair, I have not had the same experience with Shimano. My Shimano's from time to time have repair issues, not at all with my Pflueger's, they work like the day I bought them. In fairness my Shimano's are used only in saltwater, they 4000 and 8000 reels, they take much more of a beating than my freshwater Pfluegers. New out of the box performance I don't think there is all that much difference. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted October 1, 2013 Super User Posted October 1, 2013 there was a patriarch in the sale thread here at $125 I believe. Quote
down4ttown Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 I have the Pflueger Supreme MG. It has a messed up worm gear and is unusable. Anyone have any luck finding parts for these things? Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted October 1, 2013 Super User Posted October 1, 2013 I am going to have to agree with snook on the shimano vs. Pure fishing service. The over the counter lifetime warranty on shimano rods is tough to beat, but I have had multiple terrible experiences with sending reels into shimano for warranty work. So much so, that I have and will just send them to DVT from now on even if they are under warranty. Just the opposite with pure fishing, any reel I have ever sent them came back either as good as new, or completely replaced with a new one. And there rod warranty is pretty hassle free, and has a quick turn around time. Quote
MacP Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 I gave up all my other spinning reels this year in favor of Pfleuger. I only have Presidents, President XTs and Supreme Xts. They are awesome. Smooth, quality craftsmanship and I just like their handling. Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted October 1, 2013 Super User Posted October 1, 2013 I had the president reel now I think I am sold on the Patriarch. I like the look of it and from what I have read hear they are good. I loved my old reel it was very beat up and broke on me. I have a spinning Abu Garcia Orra reel and I like my old President reel over it. I am going out this weekend to get a new reel Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 The Pflueger spinning reels are great bang for the buck. I have a Ci4 in 2500 size and like it a lot as well. I don't think either will let you down. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted October 2, 2013 Super User Posted October 2, 2013 I just bought the new Patriarch. I found it on eBay for $149, shipping included. Man, that is one sweetheart of a reel. Quote

Star rods is lifetime over the counter as well, if the store is out Star will ship a rod to the store for exchange. One does not have to ship back to the manufacturer, which I think is a real hassle. Star makes a darn nice rod and they are extremely popular here. 1 Quote
adam32 Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 First off I'm neither a shimano or pflueger fan. I've had pflueger trions, presidents, supreme mg and xt's. I had nothing but problems with them. Line twist, line getting caught in the bail and behind the line roller. Two of the supremes had complete gear failure. I've also had ci4s a 2500 and 3000 and they are decent reels. If i had to choose between pfluegers and the ci4 i'd go with the ci4. I also have two stradic fj's and i would choose that reel over the ci4's any day. If you look around you can get one for around 140 bucks new. Quote
berkleyfan81 Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Almost all my spinning reels are Pflueger I have the supreme mgx , supreme xt (gold version), president xt , purist , trion , and I have some Abu Garcia cardinal 402 and orra s spinning reel . Pflueger or Abu Garcia you can't go wrong with I'm think of getting the Revo Sx and Supreme XT spinning soon . I fished with Pflueger reel for about 3 years now , and had no issues with them . All are in the 35 size except my trion spinning reel it a 30 size for panfish combo and supreme xt a 40size , my orra s spinning reel a 30 size . Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted October 5, 2013 Super User Posted October 5, 2013 I picked up the patriarch this morning so far so good I've only used if for a few hours and it makes me realize why I missed my president reel. I have the abu Garcia Orra and I like that a lot but this feels a lot better. Caught a total of 14 fish all over 12" in the 3 hours that I was out. Quote

Super User DogBone_384 Posted October 5, 2013 Super User Posted October 5, 2013 I own 2 Presidents that are mixed with a pair of 20+ year old spinning reels (a Shakespeare & Quantum) and agree with everyone above that Pfleuger reels are exceptionally smooth and feel good in your hand. My 6925 is mated to a 7' ML/F Micro Lite and casts light lures quite well. I have no other spinning reel experience, so best of luck! Quote
