LazyBASS1301600404 Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 So this pond is heavily packed with weeds, any suggestions on a crankbait that will only swim down to a foot so it won't pick up any weeds? Quote
guitarkid Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 If I was you I would get some really shallow divers, and slow roll them over the weeds. My pond has the exact same thing this year. Some of My suggestions would be: Bandit 100 series, Rapala DT-4, Spro Little John, H20 Express RC 1.5 knock off -gk Quote
kLuo Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 my favorite thing to do in this situation is to fish a lipless crank and let it sink into the top of the weeds and then rip it out. the bites will come when the bait is ripped out and starts falling. this technique has produced very well for me this year. bmadd Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 With only a foot or so of water above the grass, I would look at lipped baits like the Bandit Footloose and the Mann's 1-. 1/4 ounce lipless baits worked over the grass would work well also. Quote

bmadd Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 You should be able to find those two lipped baits as well as a few models of lipless baits in 1/4 oz. size all for less than $5. All proven fish catchers as well. The Bandit 100, Spro Little John, Rapala DT4, and the RC 1.5 all dive around 4' so I would not recommend them in this situation. Quote

Love the look on those and they dive from 0-1 feet, might be the exact crank I been looking for. Thanks! Quote
Primus Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Mann's Baby 1 Minus, Jackall Cherry 56 Zero Foot, Xcalibur Wake, Strike King 1XS & Lucky Craft RC Wake. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted August 30, 2010 Super User Posted August 30, 2010 If casting distance isn't of primary concern, don't overlook the Rapala balsa minnows (and let them rest on the surface occasionally). steve Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 30, 2010 Super User Posted August 30, 2010 My PB (largemouth) was fooled by a Norman Fat Boy. 8-) Quote
DBatey Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 both the subwart and the baby 1- are both excellent baits for the range of less than one foot. Some of the baits mentioned above run 4 feet deep, you can make them stay below a foot but your sacrificing speed and sometimes you need speed for a reaction strike. Quote
hmongkidBee Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 also check out the owner cultiva bugeye crankbait. It dives about half a foot under the water. It's actually my go to shallow crankbait now. Don't know why. Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Mann's minus 1, Bandit Footloose and the Rapala DT-1 are all in the 1 foot or less range. The Strike King 1XS is right around 2 feet and BPS has a Shallow diver as well that works pretty good. You can get the Strike King 1XS to run a bit higher in the water than the 2 feet if you hold your rod up a bit. Most of my Shallow success has been with the Strike King 1XS in Gizzard Shad, Sexy Shad or Sexy Sunfish. Quote
LazyBASS1301600404 Posted August 31, 2010 Author Posted August 31, 2010 thanks for the replies guys, I ordered a footloose and the baby -1. Will take a look at these other ones for different colors. Quote
philsoreel Posted September 1, 2010 Posted September 1, 2010 Mann's Baby 1's have always ran a little deeper than a foot for me. Mann's does however have a wake bait that runs no deeper than 4". IMO you have to run it too fast to reach 4 inches. I like the Lucky Craft RC 1.5 or 2.5 Wake. It has a jointed back and feathered treble on the rear and can go sub-surface easier than the Mann's. BassThumb Posted September 1, 2010 Posted September 1, 2010 1/2 oz lipless crank or DT Fat 1 wakebait, thick mono(14-17#), fished with the rod tip up. I do this sometimes, throwing cranks over the weeds on my buzzbait rod. Quote
kikstand454 Posted September 1, 2010 Posted September 1, 2010 manns baby 1- with the front facing point of the front treble cut off. dang near weedless. 8-) Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted September 1, 2010 Super User Posted September 1, 2010 Two baits that have not been mentioned and may be a good option for the conditions described are A Rapala Sub-walk and the Sebile Flatt Shad - suspending model.
