Rod/reel Discussion (Might Sell Sone Gear)

Sup guys!!! Haven't posted in a while. Bought a house and have been pretty busy. Any how placed 3rd in a club tourney today so pretty happy. Anyhow some of you guys may know this is my first year in a club and doing nation tourneys, club, fundraiser, etc. Over the course of the year I went up from a handful of combos to 20 something. My reason for buying so much gear was to find brands I like, differentiate the actions of rods and get a good feeling of what I need to be doing on the water. I've come to the conclusion out of all the "dedicated" set ups I need 7 total.

1. Spinner bait (baitcaster)(MH/F)

2. Shallow/medium depth crank bait (baitcaster) (M/M)

3. Drop shot/worm/finesse (spinning) (ML/F)

4. Pitching/flipping (baitcaster)(H/XF)

5. Swimbait/finesse (spinning)(M/F)

6. Top water/ spook/popper (baitcaster)(MH/F)

7. Frog (baitcaster)(H/F)

So on that note I pretty much know which rods I want to upgrade and which size/speed reels I should mostly have. For the most part I'm running 3chronarchs 1curado and 2stradics. Which I would like to go to a 50 size for flipping and maybe a larger spinning reel for swimbaits for heavier line... On top of this gear all the tackle I have bought I know what works for me and what doesn't. Colors sizes etc.

All of which leads me to this. Should I sell everything else and do upgrades as I see fit OR continue to experiment for another year?

Any input would be appreciated. Would like a good in general discussion with you guys. Thanks in advance!!

PS. Technically I have 8 setups as my go to 1 not mentioned is my Fluke/jerkbait setup. That's been kind my thing all year with the same set up as my Swimbait setup but in baitcasting not spinning.

hehe, jokes aside, it seems you have your mind set on what you need, so I would do a compromise of sorts. Sell the gear you ABSOLUTELY don't need, then slowly but surely weed out each combo until you narrow it down to the perfect 8 you need.

It depends on your preferences I guess. I don't fish tournaments so I can't really say how important it is to keep 20 something rods with you. I can say what I did though was what you mentioned; sell the stuff you don't use and upgrade to what you know you will use. Its your call. If you ask me though, if you're not going to use it, get it to someone who will, get a little money back and put it towards something you will use.

I say get rid of what you feel is a waste of space and upgrade from the money on that.. what you have named off in your gear is quality stuff (not that I really like shimano but not gonna chase that rabbit) so your not going to worry about extra gear on hand for much break down or mechanical failure.. upgrade away and like previously said.. if ya wanna hand any of that down to us poor guys.. we would greatly appreciate it. aha.

Once season is fully over I'm gonna list a bunch of stuff on here for cheap. Have 5 tourneys left. Thanks for feedback. ... any other guys that fish tournaments, have you been in my shoes?

you seem pretty set on what you want, i say go for it, maybe have an extra fo your favorite setup incase something happens, but id sell what you dont use!

I was out of the game for along time, then got back in 1997. I have since become a "collector" of sorts.

Technique specific rigs don't necessarily catch more bass, but they make the "fishing" part more fun!

My suggestion is to get rid of everything you don't really like or that you rarely use. Add gear one at a

time and set the bar a little higher even if that means putting off a purchase.

 

These are some specific examples: G.Loomis GLX MBR842C/ Core 50MG/ Tatsu #12. Probably my favorite

set-up. I use this as a dedicated rig for small swimbaits and swim jigs. Another is dedicated to soft plastics:

BCR893/ Curado 50E supertuned/ Tatsu #12. On the spinning tackle side for weightless baits: St. Croix

LES70MF/ Stella 2500FE/ Tatsu #6.

Roadwarrior,Hi,what is a bcr893,I'm assuming it is a loomis a baitcasting rod. But is it a glx mh?

well now, after searching the G.Loomis website, it appears that the GLX version of the BCR893

is no longer offered. This was their signature Senko rod. I guess the NRX is what's new.

I'm actually working through this process now. I have a bunch if gear I accumulated the last few years. Now I'm trying to sell a bunch of it and downsize to a few specific combos.

i've gone thru lots of changes over the years and somehow every spare rod/reel has made it's way back into my line up. i'm glad i didn't get rid of anything. i fish so many different lakes.  each has it's own personality and requires a different set of tools.

• Cumara 7'2 ML/F w/ Stradic: Drop shot, Senkos
• Dobyns 684CB M/M w/ Chronarch E 5.1: Shallow to Medium Cranks, Rattletraps, Spooks

This leaves me with a bunch of rods to sell couple Citicas, Curados and Chronarchs to sell.

 

Now what I plan on getting. PLEASE if any of you own these tell me what you think

• Dobyns 735C MH/XF w/ Chronarch CI4: Pitching Jigs
• Dobyns 703C MH (w/ own Chronarch E 7.1): Spinner and Buzz baits
• Dobyns 766Flip H w/ Chronarch CI4: Flipping Tubes and Jigs
• Dobyns 705CB Glass MH/MF w/ Chronarch E 5.1: Deep Divers, Top Water

And thats it 7 rods no more no less, an investment that should last me a decade. I was considering going all Cumara or all 13 but I love my Dobyns so much and had the pleasure of using a 735C and just loved it.
