Hi guys.

My father bought me the reel in the picture below. Been trying to fish it (bass) with the rod in the link below with a 0,12 fireline. Somehow cast extremly short. Iv been trying to adjust the breaks (tried alot) but with no great success. Iv also tried sending an email to "bassproshop" but they couldnt help me. Since i live in sweden i dont have the opportunity to walk in to an store and no one around here is an expert on the brand. So if you guys have any theorys to why i cast so short i would very much like to hear them. May it be the line? to thin? or the flat shape of the fireline?

Thanks alot and "skitfiske" as we say in sweden!

What lures have you been trying to cast? I can't say much about the rod as its all in swedish (I'm assuming). Make sure you're line and lure weights match the rod specifications. Also, try the cast control knob. If it gets too tight it could make it harder to cast.

OK,  first of all the rod link you posted is to a "spinning rod" if my english translator is correct. If you have a spinning rod with a casting reel you have a problem.

If you have in fact a "casting" rod then do the following.

Adjust the tension on the small knob on the left side of the reel so that when you press the thumb bar to release the spool then your lure slowly falls to the floor without any thumb pressure on the spool.

Then set the brakes on the right side of the reel to 5.  IF you are casting into the wind set it to a higher number than 5.  As you gain more thumb control lower the number.

As ARV stated, line and lure weight make a difference also.  You should have 8 to 10# mono for most applications on a light rod .  Also start your casting practice with a small soft plastic rigged with a 3/8 oz bullet weight.  This combination should give you 25 m to 50 m distance depending on your skill.

Then watch this  http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-videos/how-to-cast-baitcast.html

over and over and over.

Thanks a bunch fort your replies.

Im not new to fishing but i am new to trying to explain fishing terms in english. FishinDaddy says i have a problem if its a spinning rod with a casting reel. Would really appreciate if you would elaborate that. In regard to the knobs (breaks?) i have tried everything.. I use a ambassaduer when fishing pike so i am not new the that kind of reel. Still throw so short..

If you spooled the reel up with straight fireline with no backing it is possible that the line has dug into itself. Make a cast and when it stops try pulling line out, if it is hard to get out then you found the problem, if not then it is the braking system. That reel has a dual brake system, there is the magnetic brakes which is controlled by the dial on the non handle side plate, then there is centrifugal brakes that you adjust when you take the side plate off, if you never opened the side plate then the problem you have is all the brakes are in the "on" position. The brakes are little nubs that you pull out to turn them on and push in to turn them off, try using the reel with 2 brakes on and then use the spool tension knob on the handle side, along with the magnetic on the non handle side to fine tune.

Since you aren't new to fishing, you should already know the reasons.  Line on spinning reels comes off in big loops.  Therefore the eyes are large to small in order to funnel the loops down.  As you are aware the eye next to the reel is the largest by quite a bit.  Much larger than on a baitcast rod.  Same thing for a baitcast reel.....except the first eye is much smaller because the line comes off the reel in a relatively straight line.

Spinning reels hang off the bottom.  Baitcast reels are mounted on the top.  You already know how spinning reels are held.  Baitcast rods have a "trigger" used to keep the rod in your hand when it is cast.

EDIT: Smalljaw gave you good advice on setting up the reel.  Since you have been playing with the brakes (and I assume spool tension) with no improvement, then the first place to look is at the rod ratings to make sure you are using lures (and to a certain extent, line) within its range.

Heavy line won't cast as far as lighter line....all else being equal.

I see you are new to the forum.  :hi:  and  :welcome:

If there's a "trigger" on the reel seat, it's a casting rod.  If there's no trigger, odds are it's a spinning rod, though there are a very few casting rods with no trigger.  Those are mainly boat rods and saltwater rods, so it's extremely unlikely your rod is a casting rod if it lacks a trigger.

To get your reel dialed in, what I'd try is the following:  First, make sure the knob on the handle-side of the reel is just barely tight enough to keep the spool from knocking from side to side.  Now open up the reel and check the brake shoes mounted on the spool.  For now you want three in the "out" position.  Now close the side plate and set the outer brake dial on 3 or 4.

A 14-gram lure should be just about perfect for your rod's rating, so that's what I'd use for test-casting.  You should easily get at least 32 meters.

The reel is by the boat at my fathers house so ill try all the ideas above as soon as i get there. Big thanks!!

@new2BC4bass

Thanks for explaining that. My confusion is not so wierd as it may seem. In Swedish "spinning reel/rod" is what you guys call "bait cast rod/reel". Its exactly the same word but means the exact opposite apparently. Spinning reels are mounted on the top of spinning rods with swedish terminology.
