I think a rattle trap or a 1/4 oz white and yellow spinner bait is a good all around lure.  Probalby the spinner because of it's versatility and lack of hang ups.

there are three must-haves I keep around for any occassion.

1. Spinnerbait...preferably in white

2. Husky jerk/ X-rap...just love the shake of these lures

3. and of course a spook

A jig...period end of story. There are very few baits that you can catch fish at any depth with, in any season, any type of body of water, any water clarity, from the bank or boat, and fish in as many different presentations as you can a jig. I have been trying my best to make great strides in learning the patience necessary and as many techniques I can learn using a jig. I think anyone who does not do this is doing themselves a great dis-service.  :)

#1 = Jig

#2 = 4" senko

I guess some of you live in the deep south and can get away with spinnerbaits year round? Up north it gets a little colder and considering that I broke up ice on the lake with my boat my second trip out I do not think a topwater would work for some reason?
