JaxBasser Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 I'm looking for a casting rod for throwing weightless plastics (mainly Senkos, Speed Worms, Speed Craws, Flukes, and 7" worms). I may also throw a really light t-rig or rage rig with it (1/8 oz). I know that's a bit of a wide range of baits to throw with one rod but I bank fish and can't really tote a lot of rods. I have a 7' MH Veritas I use now for pretty much all of my single hook presentations and frogs but it's not the best for the lighter stuff. I've been hearing really good things about the Black rods and have pretty much decided on one of these. I'm having trouble picking between the 7'1 M or the 7'1 MH though. Not quite sure which would be better for what I want to do. For anyone who has used both the Omen and Veritas is the MH on the *** as stiff as the Veritas(which feels more like an H)? That's the main thing I dislike about the Veritas for light stuff. Would a M be enough to drive those hooks in and pull fish out of cover (lots of small pads and grass in the places I fish)? Quote
5fishlimit Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 I was in your shoes, and went with a 6'6" length rod. It's easier to use in areas from shore that are covered over by growth. Just something to consider. 1 Quote
JaxBasser Posted September 26, 2013 Author Posted September 26, 2013 I have a 6'6 setup I keep just in case I fish places like that. Most of my spots are open around the banks though and I don't have any problems with my 7' Veritas. Quote
MediumHeavy Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 I have both the M and MH 7'1" *** black rods and I think you'd be happy with either one. I'd lean toward the medium if you want to throw stuff without a weight, but the medium heavy would also work. If you're fishing around heavier cover, go MH. The Veritas line is underrated in terms of power, but the Omens are pretty spot on I'd say. The M is probably your best bet, though. I've used it around some moderately dense lily pads with weightless texas rigged creature baits and 30lb braid and it's been fine. It may also depend on the reel. If you have a reel with a lighter spool, you could go MH. Quote
Drewski73 Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 If youre keeping the MH around, Id go with the Medium for what youre describing. It will do THAT better, and give you two options with your MH. 1 Quote
Arv Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 I second the M power for that application. I don't have any experience with the *** rods but I agree with Drewski's logic. If you already have a MH rod, I'd go for a M power for more versatility. Quote
GaterB Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 I'd go with the M in either the 7'1 OR the 6'7". Lighter stuff is going to be easier to toss with a M power. The MH Omens have really good backbone while maintaining accurately rated actions. Quote
JD96 Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 I use a 6'6" MH, but have it on a Curado 50e. Light spool. I'd go 6'6" M for what you're describing. Quote
motodmast Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 go for the M, i have a 7'3 M *** black for sale, its in great condition and i used it exactly for what youre wanting to use it for, worked excellent, PM if you want to take a look at it. ill give you a good deal. and you are talking casting rod right? Paul Peixoto Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 2nd the ***. Very sensitive good backbone Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted September 29, 2013 Super User Posted September 29, 2013 Let me throw this out you may be interested. I have a Kistler 7' micro mag that they call the senko special It's rated as a MH rod but it loads good enough to throw a weightless 5" senko with no problems I'd like to get $90 for it and it's in great shape. I'm not trying to talk you out of getting a m power rod but this May allow you to get a higher end rod for the money... Quote
